Default gateway On-link problem!?
I have just got a new Lenovo Thinkpad with Vista Business installed. I have LAN connection, as well as wireless and 3G/GPRS connections occasionally. When I start the computer without any connection, I have the following routing table: ===========================================================================Interface List 8 ...00 1d 72 82 28 80 ...... However, I can ping the servers. You can see that the first routing entry is 0.0.0.0 -> On-Link. I think this causes the problem. So I do a "route delete 0.0.0.0" and a "ipconfig /renew", I gain the connection again with the "0.0.0.0 -> On-Link" entry. Can I ask if there is a way to fix this problem? Thanks in advance...and sorry for this long posting..^^ Raymond

More Info: - If I start the computer with the LAN cable plugged, everything works fine. - DHCP is used in the internal LAN. Thanks Raymond

Dear all, Probably the original post is too lengthy!. May I ask, then, what is "On-Link" gateway shown in the routing table. Thanks Raymond

Hi Raymond, On-link here means directly reachable. In general, such record will be generated after establishing a dial-up connection. In this case, please disconnect and disable all network connections except LAN (wired) connection to check the result. If the issue persists, please capture the output of ipconfig /all for further research. Hope it helps. Sincerely, Joson Zhou Microsoft Online Community Support

Hi Joson, I have done what you mentioned. In fact, I have attached the output in my first post. It seems that Vista still "remember" the last dial-up gateway. However, if I ping the hostname or IP address, it works. When I use IE or Outlook (with exchange server), it fails. It doesn't seem to be a DNS problem, nor a routing problem. So..I just don't know what is it about. Thanks Raymond

Dear all, Finally, I found that it is the Kaspersky NDIS filter that caused the problem. It added a default route to "on-link" gateway. After removing the NDIS filter, everything works fine. However, from the Kaspersky support web site, it stated that removing the NDIS filter may cause big problem, such as blue screen. Hope it does not happen to me. Thanks Raymond

I had a very similar problem today. None of my Vista laptops could find the office network when direct wired to the LAN. In the route print they all showed only "on-link" under the gateway. All of myXP and Vista workstations connected without problem. As it turned out, the DHCP server at the location failed to start after windows update. The workstations could handle their own reboot with no DHCP server but something about dial up ability on the laptops prevented them from remembering pre reboot DHCP information. After restarting the DHCP server all connected without reboot. My apologies if I am violating protocol by posting a variant to a solved problem. My aim was tohelp others getan ah ha! to a problem with nearly identical symptoms.
