Default Connections
Hi,Build 7000, fully updated. To connect to the internet, I have a wireless connection that registers (correctly) as local access only, then have to dial a VPN connection to get to the internet. Is there any particular reason that the VPN connection doesn't stay set as default? The VPN connection also isn't shown in the IE dialup connection dialog, which gets a little irritating. Not a major hassle, but it seems to be something that could be confusing for the less experienced.Anyone else come across this issue or have a solution?I currently have IE set not to dial a connection, then have a 10 second redial for the VPN, which works fairly well once I've made the initial connection.

Hi, Because you need to connect to VPN via a local or wireless connection, so we cannot set VPN connection as default because in this case actually the VPN server cannot be connected (your wireless connection is disabled in this case). In Internet Explorer options, you need to add the VPN manually. Click Add VPN button, add your VPN connection and choose Always dial my default connection. Arthur Xie - MSFT

Hi, I figured out the same, there is no way to set a VPN connection as the default connection and because of this you cannot see it in the IE Dialup dialog box. However, I found a workaround to force Win7 to set the VPN as the default connection. It involves editing the registry so i highly recommend to back it up before you continue.(I assume you had already created the VPN connection)Here is what you need to do (this applies only if you set all users to use the VPN you've created): 1) Go to the registry Start-->Run, type: Regedit and press enter2) Look for: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\RAS AutoDial\Default3) Create a String Value and name it: DefaultInternet and press enter to save it.4) Edit the value and write exactly the same name you gave to your VPN (The default is: VPN Connection, unless you changed it).5) Then press OK. save your work and restart your computer. In case you didn't set all users to use the VPN you've created, do the same but the registry key you'll need to edit will be HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\RAS AutoDial\Default

Thanks YoniK83! I've had the same problem for over a year! Below is my problem description. I was just going to post it, then I saw your workaround. Why doesn't Microsoft fix this bug? I can’t set the default connection in Windows 7. Neither through the Internet Options menu, nor through the network and sharing center. This is what happens: If I go to Internet Options, Add VPN, and then click “Set default”, and “Always dial my default connection”, Then when I connect, the Dial-up Connection appears, but the pull-down menu is empty – no connections are there, And when I open Internet Options again, it says “Always dial my default connection” (still) but “Current” is set to None). Or if I go to “network and sharing center” and click “network connections” and right-click to choose “set as default connection” (which is not disabled) – nothing happens!!!
