Data transfers over network are very slow
I've noticed that transferring data between my hdd's is a lot faster under windows7 rc than it was under vista x64, but I've also found that transferring data between computers on my home network is running very slowly (maximum transfer speed of 327Kbps is all I'm getting). Basically, I'm being told it will take an hour to transfer 1gb of data between the two computers, whereas vista would do it in about 5 to 10 mins. One computer is an older machine running windows xp sp3, and they both have realtek gigabit ethernet cards built in to the motherboard. all my drivers, software etc is up to date. I'm runninga linksys ag300 router (non-wireless), so any advice on how to speed up my data transfers would be appreciated (i use my old pc to store rendes and animations, as well as textures, models etc for 3d animation), and if I can't get the data transfer rate back up to a respectable level, I'm going to have to start using blank dvds again.I'm sure I haven't given enough info about my setup, so please let me know anything else I need to pass across, 'cos I really need to get this sorted.Oh, little extra: after a few tests, it doesn't matter what size data file I try to transfer, I get 250-325Kbps tops (according to the "more details" button on the copying file dialogue box).Thank you very much in advance for any help.

Hi, have you tried a straight cable between the two machines bypassing the router? Another thing to try is to let it just copy and see how long it really takes. I have copied many items over a 10/100 network and a gigabit network and find on the 10/100 it starts off showing and hour but after a short will it gets less and less. This used to happen to me on Vista aswell. Speed also starts on around 200 or 300 kbps and ends up averaging between 4 and 6 mbps. On the gigabit it usually starts off at around 80 mbps and averages around 50.

Is anything else going on on the network when you are transferring? Is your NIC actually set to run at 1GB? Half duplex or Full duplex?

No other data transfer is going on, no one else using the machine when I'm trying to copy.I tried a few copying tests, using a 500mb file, and all over them maxxed out their speed at 327Kbps (but mostly fluctuated between 250 - 315). The fastest copy was 45 minutes, the slowest was 53.Both NICs are set to run at 1GB, and I've tried full duplex for both, half dupllex for both, full on one half on the other, and even auto negotiate. Doesn't appear to make any difference.I'm going to try taking the 1gb card out of my old machine and re-enabling the on-board 100Mb NIC, just to see if that makes a difference. I've had it suggested to me that using nvidia's nforce network drivers may work better with my main computer's motherboard (an xfx one) than the supplied realtek ones, so I'm going to try that too.

Ok, I've taken out the gigabit NIC from the old machine, reenabled the onboard 10/100 realtek, set it to full duplexing, updated my main pc with nvidia's latest 64bit nforce drivers (which strangely don't give me the option of gigabit full duplexing, only 100 or 10mb). It hasn't made any difference.Transferring a 300mb file between the two computers takes 35 minutes. The maximum transfer speed I've gotten now is 329Kbps. I've also taken a hit to my internet download speeds. What was giving me 1.2MBps is now giving me 250KBps tops. Everything was running beautifully when I had vista installed on my main machine, so I can really only put the reduction down to windows 7. (Edit: undoing the changes I've made has not allievated the problem either.)I've got far less software installed currently than I used to as well. This is very much a bare bones system now with windows, open office, avg 8.5, logitech keyboard / mouse controllers and a few games being my total list of installed software. Before it's suggested, I've already tried disabling, uninstalling, and allowing exceptions through avg, and also windows firewall. No changes or differences.I'm ata loss, and I'd actually rather not go back to vista, as nice as it was, because I'm getting much better gaming and rendering performance (I do a lot of 3d stuff) under win7. It appears, at least to me, that there is something in the operating system that is restricting the use of bandwidth. I'm probably wrong, but that is how it at least seems from a watcher's (and non-programmers') frame of reference.

Can you try with your AV disabled?

I've tried with my AV uninstalled, my anti-spyware uninstalled, everything uninstalled except for windows 7 rc 7100 x64 and any current drivers available. I still geta maximum of 329 Kbps when transferring data between computer systems on my home network (of which there is my main machine and my old machine, which pretty much serves as a storage device). At this point, I have to put the problems down to windows 7. There is no other explanation I can find for why my transfer speeds would be so slow, when Vista x64 was so fast, comparatively. What further info do microsoft require from me? I really need to get transfer speeds back up to what they should be and were under windows vista.

I'm experiencing the same problem - only I'm limited to about 32k. 'can hardly repond to this post. I've tried everything Jaydead has and I have the latest (June 2009) drivers for my nVidia nics. I've see a lot of chatter about the same issue. Hope MS finds a solution quick.

Your statement....Hope MS finds a solution quick. .......is offbase, it is NVidia which must provide the drivers not microsoft.Drivers are provided by the vendor not MS.

Try this: http://www.windowsreference.com/windows-7/slow-network-file-copy-issues-in-windows-7-caused-by-remote-differential-compression/ It worked for me.... Viper
