Data missing from Windows 8 hard drive

I boot Windows 8 computer with WinPe 4.0  and copied some data on to Windows 8  Hard Drive (on Win8 OS Partition). Restarted and turn on windows 8 but that data I copied to Windows 8 hardive while I was in WinPe environment, is missing. What I did is as below:

I have a some backup data on my USB drive whis I want to copy to Windows 8 C drive but under winpe environment.

1: boot windows 8 computer with WinPe USB.

2: I created a directory "myOlddir" on Windows 8 Hard drive (where Win 8 is installed). Then I copied data from USB to "myOlddir". (Lets say Win USB drive letter is F: and Win8 drive letter is C:, I copied data from F:\Backup to C:\myOlddir). "myOlddir" was created successfully with "mkdir" command and data was successfully copied.

3. Restarted my computer and boot to Windows 8. No what I saw is ''myOlddir" is missing.

I did step 1-3 again and "myOlddir" missing again when I boot to windows 8.

Is this somewhere related to Windows 8 security. My Windows 8 is genuine OEM brand new computer. I really need help to solve this issue. And I can only perform data copy task under winPe. Please help. Appreciate many times!

Hi,

For this issue,we need to perform the steps to narrow down the issue.

1.Please list your partitions on the WinPE to confirm whether the C:\ drive is a system partition.

2.When data is successfully copied, please use dir command to confirm the size for "myOlddir" folder.

Hi Kelvin,

While in WinPe 4.0 I have verified C: is the windows 8 partition where windows and users directory is. After copying data to Windows 8 hard drive I have have verified "myOlddir" and data in "myOlddir" is there. When I shut down Winpe 4.0 and boot Windows 8 hard drive that time "myOlddir" is missing. not even hidden. completely missing.

Win pe Drive:

only one partition: Driver letter F:

Windows 8 drive has 3 partition:

Partition1: 199MB Win8 system partition (no drive letter)

Partition2: 449GB Driver letter C: (Windows 8 installed) (This is the destination drive letter C:\myOlddir)

Partition3: 15GB Recovery partition Driver letter D: (Windows OEM recovery partiton)

I copy from F:\backupdata  to C:\myOlddir

When I copy files in winpe and verify using dir in commandline all files and data is there but when I boot the system in Windows 8 environmment "myOlddir" is missing completely.

I have even tried this before copying files in win pe 4.0:

I logged in to windows 8 and created directory C:\myOlddir and gave recursive permission to current user (but currently "myOlddir" is empty).

Then I boot with winpe 4.0 and copied data to C:\myOlddir all ok.

Then I boot system with Windows 8 and "C:\myOlddir" is there but empty.

Hi SP,

Did you try to copy the file to the other drive to test it?

This method can narrow down the issue.

Meanwhile, when you boot system with Windows 8,please check the properties with myOlddir folder.

Hi kelvin, I have tried with several windows 8 systems but no luck all removes files after boot. I checked the properties of "myOlddir" and folder is empty. I changed the attributes to unhide all contemts of "myOlddir" and still empty. Is this somewhere related to ownership of files. I use robocopy in winpe to transfer files to windows 8 drive. Ans I have tried many different switches but again no luck. I really need solve this. Thanks a lot for your help! Thanks, Paul SP
