DVD drive won't autoplay CDs
I recently installed Windows 7 on a user's computer, and now their DVD player will not autoplay CDs. It worked when they had XP installed.
I've tried several suggestions and nothing seems to work. I've tried adjusting the AutoPlay settings in the Control Panel, changing settings in group policy, and changing values in registry.
Any ideas?Makolyte, Software Developer + System/Network Admin

1. Default settings for vanilla plain Windows allows for autoplay. It is valid for stand alone installation. If you have this computer in network, then double check you resulting policy. For stand alone Windows run gpedit.msc and in computer branch look
for settings in Administrative Templates \ System > Turn off Autoplay
2. Troubleshooting page is here

1. I disabled "Turn off Autoplay" in gpedit. The workstation is not in a domain, so there's no network rules causing this.
2. I did this: net start shellhwdetection and it said the service was already started
3. AutoPlay is enabled for everything, set to "ask which action to take" and for audio cds set to open in Windows Media
Still doesn't work. The only thing left is "interfering programs". What are some possible programs that could be blocking AutoPlay? Could antivirus be responsible?Makolyte, Software Developer + System/Network Admin

Yes, third party software can interfer with autoplay settings. What AV/end point security are you using?

Kaspersky anti-virus
Edit: I tried turning off Kaspersky altogether, and the CD still doesn't autoplay.

Hi,
To set default program to play CDs. (control panel->Default Programs->Set your default programs)
Does it work when you manually play the CD with player? Check if it is Codec issue.Ivan-Liu

Since AutoPlay could be canceled by a program that is running, or the service that AutoPlay needs to start might not be running. You may boot the system to clean boot environment and then try again:

Awesome, that worked. It happened to be a Startup object instead of a Service. Thanks soooooo much :D
EDIT: And to add this for anyone having the same problem, the program that was causing problems was HP Update
