DNS over VPN suddently not working anymore.
[Repost from Server 2008 forum, figured it should have something to do with Windows 7] Hello all, I've been running a Windows Server 2008 R2 with DNS for quite a while now. I have always been able to connect via a VPN (LogMeIn Hamachi²) to it, and use it as a DNS. Yet, now I have re-installed my Windows 7 on my laptop, it won't work anymore. Before it worked perfectly fine. What can be the problem here? A few other people running Vista and 7 have the same problem with connecting. And some others that use Windows XP can still connect and use the DNS tho. This can be rather annoying for me and the other people here, as we use alot of helpsites that are blocked by our school. [EDIT]If I set the VPN DNS, I can ping the DNS server, and other sites with their IPs, yet not their hostnames[/EDIT] Thanks in advance, Casper.

Can it have anything to do with Windows Updates? I've read some things about that on forums I found on Google, yet I couldn't really find out what it was :\ And the problem still exists.

How does it work if you do not use third party VPN, but replace with the VPN server in Windows Server 2008? We cannot be assure if it is a compatibility issue. What is the error message? Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. I have never set up a Windows VPN, I've tried, but it failed :p Anyways, it works perfectly fine on Windows XP, and it worked perfectly fine on Windows 7. Not anymore after I reinstalled Windows 7 though. So I don't think the VPN is the problem...

What do you mean by “it won't work anymore”, cannot connect to the VPN or the DNS does not work? Temporary disable your antivirus and firewall. Also disable the firewall on the router. If the issue still occurs in this case, I suspect that the root cause is not in the system. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. I can ping my DNS-server, but when I enter it as DNS, I cannot ping other sites, but nslookup works fine. Anyways, it's not my router or my firewall, because it does work in Windows XP.

Your problem sounds like the NIC Binding order mate! try this: 1. Open Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections 2. Press ALT key (dont hold, another list of menus will show up) Click advanced then click Advanced Settings 3. Click the adapters and bindings tab, then under connections, click the connection you want to modify 4. Then under the Binding for connection, you can move the vpn adapter up to first priority )its usually called 'Local Area Connection 2 on win7)

NIC Binding doesn't have anything to do with this. When I change it, my whole internet doesn't work anymore, even without the VPN DNS. And in XP the binding shows the same (regular LAN connection first).
