DNS lookups not working
I have setup a DNS server on my local network (internal access only) and am getting some strange behavior. I have a record in my server set up for "somename" which should map to "10.13.13.##" (## = last two digits). When I do a "nslookup somename" it returns the following: Server: mydnsserver Address: 10.13.13.### Name: somename Address: 10.13.13.## However, if I ping the same host name, it says "ping request could not find somename. Please check the name and try again." Why isn't this working? It works on linux systems but not on Windows 7.

Hello, try using the somename.domain.com instead of somename and check the result. If it is okay then check that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled and that DNS suffixes are configured correctly, If the problem persists, post ipconfig /all > ipconfig.txt text file content on the DNS server and the client computer. Thanks for the reply! If i "ping anything.somename" it works without a problem which makes me assume that ping is appending some default suffix when I run "ping somename" Although we could use something.somename would like to be able to have somename resolve as well. Is their anyway to prevent windows from appending a suffix? FYI the DNS server is BIND running on a linux machine.
