DNS issues on Vista on an AD network.
This is an interesting case, which we had seen before on someone else's Windows 7 box, he did a reinstall. As id like to avoid that, and im damn curious how to fix this. So he can ping any box on our network via IP address. When he tries to ping anything via host name it says: Ping request could find host "hostname". Please check the name and try again. when he does an nslookup: nslookup "hostname" server: unkown address: DNSserverIP *** unKnown can't find "hostname": No response from server. The results are the same using FQDN. I checked his DNS settings, had them match mine, still nothing. IPv6 is disabled through the registry. Other than his NIC, there are two virtual NICS for VMware using a different network with a subnet mask. there is no gateway or dns info there.

try pinging the DNS server by IP address.if the ping is successful, then go into tcp/ip properties and enable "netbios over tcp/ip", then try again to ping a system via hostname. if this doesnt work, then check your DNS host(A) records to see if there is an entry for the vista box, if not manually add the entry and try again.Goodluck Tunde Abagun MCP,MCSA,MCTS,MCITP en p "for the love of Computers"

I enabled the netbios over tcp/ip. No change there. There is an A record of the box, as I can ping that by both ip and hostname.

Hi, You can check for the following in this scenario 1) If we have a DNS suffix search list specified then, try using the parent DNS suffix instead. 2) Check for the following registry values Location : HKLM\System\CCS\Services\TcpIp\Parameters Domain: XXX.com NV Domain: XXX.com Location: \Interfaces\(GUID) Domain: XXX.com 3) The domain name under System Properties is XXX.com. 4) Check for the DNS Client service.. it should be in the started phase. 5) Check for the file version of : DNSApi.dll and TCPIP.sys In certain case the TCPIP.sys was at the SP2 level and DNSAPI.dll was at SP1 level. This was the reason why the stack wsa unable to append DNS suffixes to all outbound queries. Installing SP2 on the server resolved the issue. So I found that the \Interfaces\(GUID) Domain: was missing the entry. I put it in there and did an nslookup, nothing. It probably needs a reboot, which will have to wait for the user to do it. I didnt want to reboot it on him in case he left work open on his session. Ill post back when theres an outcome.

Given this situation, it is suggested run the following command to reset DNS: IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS Regards, Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question.
