DNS Search List broken?
Hi,I have a problem with DNS search lists where the search is not occuring when typing partially qualified domain names.For example:C:\Users\darren>ping pqf.sfbayPing request could not find host pqf.sfbay. Please check the name and try again.But this works:C:\Users\darren>ping pqf.sfbay.xxx.comPinging pqf.sfbay.xxx.com [129.146.137.243] with 32 bytes of data:Reply from 129.146.137.243: bytes=32 time=150ms TTL=243Reply from 129.146.137.243: bytes=32 time=149ms TTL=243Reply from 129.146.137.243: bytes=32 time=150ms TTL=243Same setup running Windows XP works fine. Is this perhaps a Windows 7 networking bug?C:\Users\darren>ipconfig /allWindows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : darren-PC Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : uk.xxx.com xxx.comEthernet adapter Local Area Connection 3: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : UK.xxx.COM Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel(R) PRO/1000 PL Network Connection #2 Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-0E-7B-D1-F4-E5 DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::3835:bdc6:ffff:5422%25(Preferred) IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 129.156.39.196(Preferred) Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.254.0 Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : 24 February 2009 09:14:13 Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : 24 February 2009 13:14:13 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 129.156.38.1 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 129.156.86.12 DHCPv6 IAID . . . . . . . . . . . : 536874619 DHCPv6 Client DUID. . . . . . . . : 00-01-00-01-11-2F-65-FA-00-15-B7-CD-51-60 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 129.156.86.11 129.156.86.12 129.157.8.52 129.159.90.83 NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled

HiYou cannot ping in this way in any OS not only in W7If it is working in XP then you haverecordin lmhosts that bind this incorrect typed sub domain with IP of the server or you have not set same DNS sufixes in W7

I agree. The settings in XP and Win7 must be different. I don't see that xxx.com is set as a suffix only uk.xxx.com. Can you post ipconfig /all from an XP machine that works as you want it to?Kerry Brown MS-MVP - Windows Desktop Experience

_darrenI just checked it and you are semi-correct :)It is working. but for single level sub domainFor example it is not working in this case: ping pqf.sfbaybut it is working for this case ping sfbay or ping pqf

I've been playing with this as well. I can't get it to work the way you want in XP, Vista, or Windows 7.Kerry Brown MS-MVP - Windows Desktop Experience

Thanks for your reply. I can tell you I don't have any local hosts file on my XP system, it's just using DNS.

Hi All,To Answer some replies:the ipconfig /all listing was given in my original post. You can see clearly that I have two search lists uk.xxx.sun and xxx.com. I can again confirm that this setup, with same DHCP servers and DNS servers works fine in XP (SP2 and SP3)I can also confirm that ping pqf.sfbay works fine from XP as well as Solaris, Open Solaris and Linux with again the same DHCP servers and DNS servers.I therefore came to the conclusion that this is a Windows 7 networking issue.I have to say, on further investigation, if I were just to ping pqf then I can see that it fails and then tried pqf.uk.xxx.com and then pqf.xxx.com.However, if I add a partial domain i.e. ping pqf.sfbay then there is no attempt by windows to append uk.xxx.com or xxx.com. Is this as expected? As I mentioned under XP, Solaris etc this works fine.RegardsDarren

It's only working for single-level sub domain.Given that I find this works as expected under other OS's eg XP, Solaris etc., would you say this is a bug?

Hello _darrenYes I agree with you this is bug.It must query DNS for name and if it is not found to append to typed textsuffixes in DNS suffix list in order, no matter how sub levels are includedBellow is the link that Mark L. Hi, Yes have RC installed and I am still struggling with this issue. To be honest it's driving me nuts now being able to use internal URLs which are partially qualified. Is anyone looking at this issue? Thanks Darren

Will this issue be fixed before the first ship of Win7? It's still causing me major problems. Anyone? Darren

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate edition (General release) and have the same issue. Can someone provide suggestions for this issue? I am unable to "ping host.india" but same thing works if I give host.india.domain.com. I have many domains like india.domain.com (example: usa.domain.com, uk.domain.com etc..) and I can't add every domain to the DNS suffix list. From Windows XP machine, I am able to "ping host.india" successfully. The DNS suffix list is exactly same for both Windows XP and Windows 7 OS. -Chandu

I've just upgraded to the general release of Ultimate too and was disappointed to see this issue hadn't been resolved. However, after some Google'ing I have discovered this article http://blogs.technet.com/networking/archive/2009/04/16/dns-client-name-resolution-behavior-in-windows-vista-vs-windows-xp.aspx which fixes this issue. Follow the article and use gpedit.msc to change to "Allow DNS Suffix Appending to Unqualified Multi-Label Name Queries" and everything now works correctly. Hope this helps you all! Regards Darren

I just came across this in my office, and was able to fix it by enabling an option in the Group Policies editor. To fix: - Open "gpedit.msc" from the Run command. - Under Computer Configuration, Select Administrative Templates. - Click on Network. - Click on DNS Client - Double Click on "Allow DNS Suffix Appending..." (First One) - Change value from "Not Configured" to "Enabled" Exit, and you should be good! This worked for me and I cant believe it took me so long to find the fix. Cheers!
