DNS Registration not working on one specific windows 7 client
Hi, I have a small home network running a windows 2003 R2 active directory server which also is the DNS server. DHCP however is handled by my Linksys router which passes along the necessary DNS IP addresses. My network consists of 4 Windows 7 based desktop/laptop pc's which get IP addresses dynamically via DHCP. One of these clients however, does not properly register itself with the DNS server. I have done a Wireshark monitoring sessions on the other clients, and can see that when they request a new address from the DHCP server (ipconfig /renew) they properly send some packets to the DNS server to let it know the name and ip address they will be using. The same thing happens when I force this by running 'ipconfig /registerdns' on those clients. On that one faulty client however, when either doing ipconfig /renew or /registerdns, nothing at all is sent to the DNS server, and thus the DNS records for this client are not updated. Also there is no error whatsoever being reported, ipconfig /registerdns returns the following message: Registration of the DNS resource records for all adapters of this computer has been initiated. Any errors will be reported in the Event Viewer in 15 minutes. which seems fine, also after 15 minutes no errors can be seen either in the event log of the win7 client, nor in the log of the W2K3 AD controller. I've already verified that the network adapter settings are the same among all my Win7 clients. I've also done a reset of the IP stack by running 'netsh int ip reset' but nothing seems to help. Thanks for any help!

Make sure that Register this connection's addresses in DNS check box is checked in TCP/Ip DNS settings.

So no traffic is leaving the Win 7 box...hmmm. Also check if there is a DNS record already in place in the zone for this computer, check the Security tab (properties)...make sure that the computer account for this Win 7 computer has access to update the record.
