DNS /File Sharing Problem
I have a network that consists of two PC's one running Vista 64 and one Windows 7. The Windows 7 box could not connect to the vista box. I could see the other computer in "Network" but when I tried to connect I got error 0x80070035. I made sure they were both in the same workgroup. I can connect to the Windows 7 box from the Vista box and browse the directory. If I pinged the Vist box from the Windows 7 box it could not find it. I added an entry in the hosts file for the other box and now I can connect, but cannot open any of the shares. It had originally been setup with server assigned IP address and DNS, which should work with a wireless router, but I added the IP address of my wireless router as the DNS to see if that would help. Still could not open the shares. What would cause the screwy network issues? The DNS table in the router has the entries for both computers. It is like the DNS lookup is not working properly in the Windows 7 box. I have also checked the security on the shares and I should be able to open the shares on the Vista box.Another strange symptom. When I first installed the OS I tried to create a Homegroup. It would not create it. It sayed that it must be a Home Network but it was a Home Network.

HiThere is some bug in w7 beta that prevents creation of homegroups if TCP/IPv6 protocol is disabled, but homegroup is not needed to connect W7 and vista computers and this is not related to your problem. To access shared resources you need to have followingsettingsset in W7 advanced sharing optionsControl Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings- turn on network discovery- turn on file and printer sharing

Network discovery was already turned on, file and print sharing was turned on and TCP/IPv6 is enabled.

Are both computers using the same username and password combination?

Hi Kent, I suggest that you temporary disable the anti-virus and firewall. If the issue persists, please remove the entry you added from Hosts file, and then try to access the computer by entering \\ip address in Start Search box. What is the result? Arthur Xie - MSFT

HI,Try by adding the user account that you are using on your W7 with the same password into the WV computer. That's a basic solution on the previous MS OS.Good luck!!Regards,
