Hi there, how much FREE space does your hard drive have? am not certain whether that is the problem,as it may well not be,but do check as at least 15% Free space is needed, for the defragmenter to work. also think that you could do with more Ram.f there is enough free space,do come back and let us know.

thanks a bunch mysoul for the reply. when I run the defrag, the window says it is defraging file system NTFS and it tells me the capacity is >32.96 GB......free space is >22.28 GB and % free space is 67% which I am guessing will be the percentage of free space I will gain after defragmenting. the screen that shows up when the defrag crashes tells me I can try to disable or remove any new installed hardware or software, which I did not install anything new and the screen also says I can disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. I do know how to get to safe mode and have used it to configure my startup options such as what programs I want to startup but that F1 thing that takes me to the BIOS setup....well thats very confusing to me, I have no clue what I am doing and I could not find anything there to disable shadowing or cacheing. I send a big thank you to all who can help me with this problem.

have you scanned your disk for errors yet? right click start > explore > right click on c drive > properties > tools tab > check for errors > click both boxes and hit okay > you will be prompted to reboot (be sure to accept the scan on reboot option), you don't have to do it now, just wait until you have an hour or so free time, then reboot. Once it's done scanning, start > run > eventvwr.msc > apps folder on left and double click the top item in the right pane and start working down until you get the results of the scan. Click the two pieces of paper there to copy to clipboard, and then come back here and post them please. thanks, vM.V.P. - Desktop Experience | M.C.S.A. | M.C.P. - MS Server 2k3, Network Architecture

also, fwiw, 512 should be plenty to defrag it....if you were doing some heavy ram-intensive usuage such as GIS files or whatnot, I'd bump it up, but my wife's been running 512 for several years now, does fine. Certainly never crashes during defragging. :) thanks, vM.V.P. - Desktop Experience | M.C.S.A. | M.C.P. - MS Server 2k3, Network Architecture
