DHCP Client service
We new Dell Vostro laptops.. Running windows 7 Pro. We have been trying to connect them to a Windows 2003 DC. They are able to recieve DHCP addresses before going on to the DC as soon as they are in the domain we are now having a problem with the DHCP Client... The first error was about the service account being different which i easily sorted by changing the the log on account to Local Service... The problem is now I get an error "Windows could not start the DHCP Client service on Local Computer. Error 5:Access is denied" I have searched thru many forums and they all seem to think its the service account that has incorrect privilages, I have gone into the registry and changed HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\DHCP HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\DHCP\configuration HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\TCP/IP I have even reset the AFD and still no change

Go to %SystemRoot%\system32 and then right click on services.msc , click on run as and use the administrator account (Check if there is not an administrator account that is disabled. If you find it, it is the account you should enable and use) and finally enable the DHCP Client service. Tried that and it won't even start the services, and when i log on as the admin whether locally or on the domain still cannot start the DHCP client service

This is a problem that happened because the NETWORK SERVICE is unable to administer the DHCP service. This is a link about how to solve your issue, just follow the first method that is mentioned: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/895149 Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. I have followed both steps and still can't start the the DHCP service, I even tried to unlink every GPO on the server still no change. I have taken the win7 computer off the network and still no success with the service. I tried starting AFD and still nothing now when I run ping from the command prompt I get an error saying "Transmit failed. General failure" and yet when I start command prompt using run as administrator it pings just fine. We have 25 laptops and all of them could get DHCP before they went into the domain as soon as they got into the domain dhcp client gets disabled

Even if you re-install the OS and the computer is not a member of your domain, the problem persists? Best regards.

When we reinstall the computer and the computer is not a member of the domain everything works well, its when we add it to the domain that it starts to give issues, we have unlinked all GPOs on the DC and tried but still the error comes.

After disabling the GPO, haven't you forgot to launch the gpupdate /force command? Best regards.

i have run the command more than once when i look at the event viewer of the client it shows that there is no GPO being linked

Are you sure you have not installed a software after the re-install? Because there is someone ones which can block it. (Maybe a GPO installed a software before you disable it) Best regards.

Hi, This issue may occur if the "NT Service\DHCP" account does not have the necessary permissions for the following keys: Registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dhcp permission needed: Query value, Create value, Enumerate Subkeys, Notify, Read Control Registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dhcp\Configurations permission needed: Full Control, Read To fix this issue, you may try the following steps: 1. In Registry Editor, browse to the key for which you need to add permission. 2. Right click the key, and click Permissions. 3. Make sure Locations is selected to be the local computer. 4. In the "Enter the object names to select field, type "NT SERVICE\mpssvc". Then click “Check name.” 5. Click OK. 6. Then select the account which appears in the list, and add the appropriate permission for it. 7. When this is done, click OK. For more information, please refer to this Microsoft KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943996 If it still cannot work, please also run the following command with elevated privilege: NET LOCALGROUP administrators "NT Authority\Local Service" /add Does it work? Arthur, have the same problem here, tried the fix you sugested including the Microsoft KB article, and adding Local Service to the administrators group as you sugested, and yet the services did not start. Debugging with Sysinternals Process Monitor I came to a svchost process started by services.exe not beeing able to open a registry path for setting a value. Chequed the permissions of the registry path and added Local Service ("Servicio Local", as my locale is Spanish) as full control (in spite of the fact that Local Service now is part of the administrators group and the group is full control on the reg path) and the same problem happens, I don't know if the error taken from Process Monitor could help: Date & Time: 04/02/2011 09:49:09 a.m. Event Class: Registry Operation: RegOpenKey Result: ACCESS DENIED Path: HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\WDI\Config TID: 3536 Duration: 0.0000698 Desired Access: Set Value Description: Host Process for Windows Services Company: Microsoft Corporation Name: svchost.exe Version: 6.1.7600.16385 Path: C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe Command Line: C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe -k LocalServiceNoNetwork PID: 888 Parent PID: 556 Session ID: 0 User: NT AUTHORITY\SERVICIO LOCAL Auth ID: 00000000:000003e5 Architecture: 64-bit Virtualized: False Integrity: Etiqueta obligatoria\Nivel obligatorio del sistema Started: 04/02/2011 09:49:08 a.m. Ended: 04/02/2011 09:49:09 a.m. Modules: kernel32.dll 0x76b80000 0x11f000 C:\Windows\System32\kernel32.dll Microsoft Corporation user32.dll 0x76ca0000 0 xfa000 C:\Windows\System32\user32.dll Microsoft Corporation ntdll.dll 0x76da0000 0x1ab000 C:\Windows\System32\ntdll.dll Microsoft Corporation svchost.exe 0xfff70000 0xb000 C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe Microsoft Corporation dps.dll 0x7fef1a00000 0x2c000 C:\Windows\System32\dps.dll Microsoft Corporation taskschd.dll 0x7fefa670000 0x120000 C:\Windows\System32\taskschd.dll Microsoft Corporation gpapi.dll 0x7fefbfc0000 0x1b000 C:\Windows\System32\gpapi.dll Microsoft Corporation userenv.dll 0x7fefbfe0000 0x1e000 C:\Windows\System32\userenv.dll Microsoft Corporation sspicli.dll 0x7fefcba0000 0x25000 C:\Windows\System32\sspicli.dll Microsoft Corporation cryptbase.dll 0x7fefcc30000 0xf000 C:\Windows\System32\cryptbase.dll Microsoft Corporation profapi.dll 0x7fefcd00000 0xf000 C:\Windows\System32\profapi.dll Microsoft Corporation KernelBase.dll 0x7fefcf40000 0x6b000 C:\Windows\System32\KernelBase.dll Microsoft Corporation sechost.dll 0x7fefd1c0000 0x1f000 C:\Windows\System32\sechost.dll Microsoft Corporation advapi32.dll 0x7fefd1e0000 0xdb000 C:\Windows\System32\advapi32.dll Microsoft Corporation lpk.dll 0x7fefd2c0000 0xe000 C:\Windows\System32\lpk.dll Microsoft Corporation oleaut32.dll 0x7fefd2d0000 0xd7000 C:\Windows\System32\oleaut32.dll Microsoft Corporation gdi32.dll 0x7fefd630000 0x67000 C:\Windows\System32\gdi32.dll Microsoft Corporation clbcatq.dll 0x7fefd6a0000 0x99000 C:\Windows\System32\clbcatq.dll Microsoft Corporation ole32.dll 0x7fefd740000 0x202000 C:\Windows\System32\ole32.dll Microsoft Corporation rpcrt4.dll 0x7fefeb20000 0x12e000 C:\Windows\System32\rpcrt4.dll Microsoft Corporation imm32.dll 0x7fefec80000 0x2e000 C:\Windows\System32\imm32.dll Microsoft Corporation msctf.dll 0x7fefecb0000 0x109000 C:\Windows\System32\msctf.dll Microsoft Corporation usp10.dll 0x7fefee10000 0xca000 C:\Windows\System32\usp10.dll Microsoft Corporation msvcrt.dll 0x7feff010000 0x9f000 C:\Windows\System32\msvcrt.dll Microsoft Corporation 0 ntoskrnl.exe MmUnmapViewInSessionSpace + 0x1460 0xfffff80002e30a30 C:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe 1 ntoskrnl.exe RtlGUIDFromString + 0x1e1eb 0xfffff80002dc0beb C:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe 2 ntoskrnl.exe SeQueryInformationToken + 0x20b4 0xfffff80002d78e84 C:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe 3 ntoskrnl.exe ObOpenObjectByName + 0x1cd 0xfffff80002d7de4d C:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe 4 ntoskrnl.exe ObReferenceObjectByHandle + 0x67fc 0xfffff80002d5cdcc C:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe 5 ntoskrnl.exe NtOpenProcessTokenEx + 0x173 0xfffff80002d5ef0f C:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe 6 ntoskrnl.exe KeSynchronizeExecution + 0x3a43 0xfffff80002a7e993 C:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe 7 ntdll.dll ZwOpenKeyEx + 0xa 0x76df0caa C:\Windows\System32\ntdll.dll 8 kernel32.dll BaseThreadInitThunk + 0x272 0x76b9f7d2 C:\Windows\System32\kernel32.dll 9 kernel32.dll BaseThreadInitThunk + 0x573 0x76b9fad3 C:\Windows\System32\kernel32.dll 10 kernel32.dll RegOpenKeyExW + 0x1d 0x76b9566d C:\Windows\System32\kernel32.dll 11 dps.dll ServiceMain + 0xb4d1 0x7fef1a13121 C:\Windows\System32\dps.dll 12 dps.dll ServiceMain + 0xbcbc 0x7fef1a1390c C:\Windows\System32\dps.dll 13 dps.dll ServiceMain + 0x33e1 0x7fef1a0b031 C:\Windows\System32\dps.dll 14 svchost.exe svchost.exe + 0x1344 0xfff71344 C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe 15 sechost.dll RegisterServiceCtrlHandlerExA + 0x269 0x7fefd1ca82d C:\Windows\System32\sechost.dll 16 kernel32.dll BaseThreadInitThunk + 0xd 0x76b9f56d C:\Windows\System32\kernel32.dll 17 ntdll.dll RtlUserThreadStart + 0x21 0x76dd3021 C:\Windows\System32\ntdll.dll Thanks, Ariel
