DHCP Client Enabled on XP x64= LAN Down.
XP x64 Takes down netowork. I have 2 machines with XP SP3 x64 in a largely 32-bit environment. These machines will take down the network. For a long time I did not know what was causing packet loss on pings, and no LAN or exteranal webpages to be loaded. I was able to identify the problem by unplugging every Dataport one by one (we only have around 150 or so). I was able to isolate the problem to a specific machine. I had cloned the machine and put the clone on another identical hardware configuration. This machine would take the network down as well. Just for posterity, I disable the on-board NIC and inserted a PCI NIC, problem still occured. I was able to come in one night long after everyone was gone and the network had 'mysteriously' gone down again. I knew it was the XP x64 machine causing it. At this point I decided to take the other identical machine offline. If I physically unplugged the ethernet cable and the network would come back up immediately. I did this 3 or 4 times. I also tried troubleshooting to identify which service could be causing the issue. Of all services I started and stopped only the DHCP Client Service would take down the network when started. It was like a switch. DHCP Client enabled=Network down. Stoped= Network Up. repeatedly. I have reformatted both machines with xp x64 but do not want a repeat. Any information you could provide would be appreciated. We do have one server running server 2008 x64 (Not a domain controller. Basically just a host for a virtual Server 2003 running Exchange 2003) Network Configuration: We have 3 physical on site servers and one virtual. We also have a VPN to two remote sites with backup domain controllers located there. Around 50 workstation or so, almost all of them Windows XP 32. just 1 or 2 Win 2k machines. No Vista or Win7 yet. Any idea on why this is happening would be helpful.1 person needs an answerI do too
