DCOM Security
I've got Vista Ultimate up-to-date, and I'm trying to run some XAMPP applications. When I try to turn the services on, I get an event ID of 10016, saying that: The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID {8BC3F05E-D86B-11D0-A075-00C04FB68820} to the user BobsPC\Bob SID (S-1-5-21-3871464363-2101958821-4241462091-1000) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool. I selected the on-line help, and was directed to Component Services to set the proper permissions. I loaded it up, found the app (which is a HUGE PAIN, let me say; would someone PLEASE fix this application so I can sort by ID???) and tried to set the permission. ALL of the permission setting items are greyed out! I've tried: 1) Running the application 2) Running the application as Administrator 3) Making sure I'm admin on the box (I am) 4) Logging into the Admin account, running as Administrator No luck. Does anyone know how I can set the permisssion on this item? Do I need to do something else first?

Nice of someone to answer you. I get the same error when IE8 fails to install an ActiveX control (a Linksys camera .OCX, if curious). If you *and* I are having this issue, and I *know* that I am not hand-crafting a bunch of DCOM security just to torque the Vista gods, then this issue is much more prevalent than anyone is admitting.P.S.I am running Vista SP-1, IE8, and got here by doing an in-place upgrade of XP (no comments please from the chicken-blood shamans out there thatwant to regurgitate"that's why you should always do a clean install... uhhh... yep... that's right... duh.... duh.... duh....").So, Joe, did you ever get this resolved? Like you, I did *exactly* what the event was complaining about; I granted myself the Local Activate permission (and more) to this specific CLSID using dcomcfg. There's no frickin' way that I should keep logging the same error! Grrr...
