D-Link DWL-g520 wirless issues, cant connect to wireless network
I have a D-link PCI wireless card, I have installed the software drivers from D-link and then installed the hardware and it doesnt let me connect to a wireless network. When I try to connect to the network I select the name 2wire and it doesnt let me put in the WEP key even WPA. I have selected another router in the area named Netgear and as soon as I hit connect it will ask for the passkey. I have downloaded the current drivers for the Windows Vista 32 bit, I also chekced the HW compatibility list and it listed the adapter in there but that was for windows Vista. I would like to know if there is a way that I can fix this issue, I had a win XP pro setup also and the card worked flawlessly, if you need any information from me then I can get it for you I am using Windows 7 RC build 7100

Just a thought, are you using your wireless and internet connection through a router? If the answer is yes, ensure that the ssid and passphrase is the same for both router config and the wireless connection within your comp

Yeah its the same I even tried to manually connect to it by putting in the SSID and WEP, when I hit connect it would automatically come up with the error that windows cannot connect but doesnt report any diagnostic errors or anything like that.

Hmm are you able to connect or get detected if you disable the wep and ssid? Btw when you mention you try inputting the ssid and wep, is with the ethernet cable plug on to the comp or basically just wireless?

I havent disabled the WEP yet because its not my network its the landlords he let us use it, I had the computer working fine hardwired when we lived at our other place, it detects the SSID but when I hit connect it comes up with the error. Its just straight wireless here.

The other thing I have noticed is when the computer starts up there is an icon in the system tray for the DLink but when you move the pointer over it the icon dissapears, in Windows XP there would be a capital D on the system tray for that card, I tried running it in compatibility mode with windows XP and also Admin and still the same result.

When I select another wireless in the area, the name is netgear it asks for a passkey, but when I try the 2 different 2wire routers they automatically give me the error. Is there a log I can look at to maybe get more info on the problem on my PC

You are trying to connect your neighbourhood wireless? And could you give me the exact error when you mention a error you've encounter?

Im not trying to connect to them Im just saying that on the 2wire named routers its not coming up with the prompt for a passkey. The error i get is "Windows is unable to connect to 2wire***"

Im going to try to have the landlord change it to no key to see what happens, I'm getting an error now that says windows doesnt support shared wep key if you want to connect anyways you have to seup a profile. I setup a profile with the correct information but its not linking to the wireless.

Yup ask him to change to no key or default and try connecting with the eithernet cable plug in, once your's wireless is detected, set the ssid and passphrase for your comps under wireless connection (ensure is the same with the router config page) Once is done on the router config page, remember to save and exit, next unplug the cable and try accessing using wireless

I havent asked him yet but I tried something, I have a 2wire router from our old place that I setup with a different name and not the standard 2 wire name, as soon i see the wireless connection and I hit connect it pops up a screen for the passkey, of course there is no internet on that 2wire but it did ask for a passkey. When I see the landlord I will ask him if we can change it to no WEP or WPA just leave it open so I can test it. The other thing with the cable, there is no run back here so I cant connect it to his router through CAT 5 cable.

Hi, I have checked the D-Link site and found DWL-G520 was no longer supported by D-Link: DWL-G520 High Speed 2.4GHz (802.11g) Wireless 108Mbps PCI Adapter Since there is no Windows 7 driver for this device, it may not work properly. Nicholas Li - MSFT

This should be the final to the last update from me, I had the landlord with my help of course disable the WEP temporarily and that fixed the issue, my Windows 7 machine is finally on wireless internet with the D-Link card in it, I'm going to go into the router when the Landlord comes back and change it to WPA and see if that works, the card does support WPA so Im hoping this might work so we can lock down the wireless. Thanks for all your help
