Hi Microsoft Community! I have a little problem with the Windows Credential Manager under Windows 7, Windows 8 RP, Windows 8 RTM (have a Dreamsparks version) and Windows Home Server 2011. When I store logins in the manager like for example to connect network shares between the machines, the manager loses those passwords after an while (2-3 days or so). At first I thought this happens when the computer is restarted or booted from scratch as the machines usually are hibernated in my home - but even when they are not restarted the lose/forget the logins. What do I need to do, to fix this problem? I need the logins for example for automatic nightly backups. Hi, Maybe the authentication is blocked by antivirus and firewall in your system, or the firewall on your router. You may temporary disable the security programs and try again.Kim Zhou TechNet Community Support

Hi Kim, thanks for you reply! Regarding the WHS: there is no AV or FW in place excluding the FW of the router. On the clients are Microsoft Essentials Security tools in place. But however I can't image that this is caused by AV or FW because the credential manager and the work flow with robocopy and the network shares plus the backup process of the WHS works quite fine - the credentials just vanish after some days/hours. What else can it be? I can I do/use anything else to backup the files every night via networks shares or to connect to the network shares? (I have already tried net use but it didn't help). I noticed something strange today: The WHS was able to backup both, (HTPC and Client(while client means my laptop). But the WHS was not able to reach the share of the client, but was able to reach the share of the HTPC, as well as the HTPC was able to reach the server and the shares of the client. I was able to access the server remotely from the client, pings, tracerts everything fine - but I just couldn't connect the shares between the server and the client. But between HTPC<>Client and HTPC<>Server worked everything fine... any though to this one?

Hi, What is the exact error when doing \\UNC path access? Could you also specify "Credential Manager loses saved password"? Do you mean the saved password entry missing? or it just doesn't work? " I mean, I enter the credentials in the manager one day and the other day when I check the logs I just see the error messages: than I investigate the CMng and their are no credentials listed... so the robocopy jobs for example were not able to make the job because they were not allowed to enter the paths on the other machines. In another forum somebody mentioned clean-up utilities as a possible cause. I use CCleaner in the nightly routine but I have tried to reproduce the error with the CCleaner scheduled task and with the CCleaner tool itself and nothing happend. Is it possible that CCleaner causes the error? Would it be better to use the Windows in-build clean up?

Hi, So the issue just occurs when using Robocopy? if you access the shared folder directly from Run \\UNCpath and type in the credential, it does work? If it is the case, please check your credential setting, for example, User John created on desktop A and User John created on laptop B, please check whether the password is set to same. In addition, please granter everyone full control on the shared folder and check the result. Yes, CCleaner has a feature cleanning cache...history..you could try deleting for a test. Hi Brian, Well I can't point to Robocopy, Robocopy is just the only tool which requires the network drives in the routine - and the logfiles created by the event triggers in place to start and shut down the clients (those triggers write a log file on the server which is mailed to me before the server it selfs shuts down). I have a user with the same credentials on every machine, the problem is the user on the server executing the shares and skripts is the server admin not this "shared" user. Might I just create the server admin user on all clients and grant him full control to the shared folders? I will try this. Regarding CCleaner: I have tested CClenaer with the scheduled skript and the standard GUI, nothing happed after multiple runs - the credentials where still there. Any other tip? Hi, The reason I want you to test \\UNC and copy and paste files directly is to ensure SMB working.
