Credential Manager error in Windows 7...
Hi. I cannot access credential manager for the life of me!!! I'm not sure if this is a recent error on this PC, but I'm pretty sure it's been like this since I installed Windows 7 x64 Pro. Anyways, every time I go to Control Panel and open Credential Manager I get this error.... An error occurred while performing this operation. Error Code: 0x80071AAF Error Message: The encryption operation could not be completed because a transaction is active. I've google'd everything about this and had no ideas whatsoever??? It has something to do with my encryption I guess. But I verified that all correct EFS certificates were running. I had changed the credmgr service to Auto, Manual, etc... Also, this is custom built computer so there isn't any third-party software running that would conflict, like HP's cred manager... Please! Somebody have a solution for me so I can map my network drives without having to enter the cred's every time.

Hi. Yeah, I have tried checking for consistency with the sfc /scannow command, and it didn't help. Did it twice actually. I've had this system about 6 months, and I'm running a retail version of Windows 7. Also, it's a full copy. So, I still can't figure this out, but will post a reply immediately if I get working again. Thanks.

Hi, Temporarily disable EFS function and access Credential Manager to see how it works. Based on my research, error code 0x80071AAF is the error ERROR_EFS_NOT_ALLOWED_IN_TRANSACTION. This error occurs if you calls the CreateFileTransacted function on an EFS file or calls the EncryptFile function on a file in a transaction. Do you happen to store encrypted files or folders on a remote server? This isn’t allowed because the remote server isn’t “trusted for delegation”. Meanwhile, please check that the volume is formatted as NTFS. For more references, please read: When to Use Transactional NTFS Programming Considerations for Transactional NTFS Best Regards Dale

Microsoft’s new generation operating system Windows 7 will include a system for managing the online IDs, logons, and passwords that you must manage for all of the Web sites you visit. Dubbed Windows Credentials, this feature utilizes a KeyRing for storing online credentials and a Credential Manager user interface. These settings can be backed up to and restored from a secure online vault. To access Credential Manager in Windows 7 go to Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Credential Manager

Hey guys. Thanks for your suggestions. I'm not sure what the heck Kristain is talking about, but for Dale's comment... I did disable all encryption for this computer. And guess what? It's working now!!! But the weird thing is, I'm not completely sure what the exact issue was??? I think it was just a conflict with this PC's certificate and my other PC that was sharing my files. The other PC is sharing encrypted files. After disabling encryption, it did of course, let me use Credential Manager. But I encrypted everything again, and voila still working fine. When it was disabled, (the encryption), I added the shared computers' credentials into credential manager. Though, my main solution might have been due to the Homegroup accounts. I have a Homegroup on the shared PC, and was logged in to the HTPC's own Homegroup. I wasn't joined. So, I disabled all Homegroups on the HTPC, and can't really remember if Credential Manager was working after that??? I was messing with numerous settings, and logging off and on... Didn't really record my troubleshooting steps. Bad practice! But Homegroup sharing is completely different from 'regular' sharing??? So, the issue had to be with the two encryption certificates creating a conflict. It may just have been a corrupt encryption when I did it the first time too??? Sorry I don't have exact steps to correct this problem. It is resolved though. All my mapped drives automatically log in, and save it's credentials. :) Thanks for the comments. Also, I will note that changing the Service's start up function did not solve this problem. The sfc /scannow did not solve anything either. But these steps are one's you should take first! They may be a solution for certain situations.
