Create New File Association
I edit a large number of .php files on a regular basis both locally and via ftp.I have gone through the file set associations control panel options and can not find .php as a file extension that I can change the default program to Notepad++ for.Is there any way for me to create my own file extension to be displayed in this and then choose the default for it??I would also like to know if you can change the current default to a program not in the list that hasn't been detected but specify the program's path as it is already been installed on the pc in question? Please advise.I.T. If I understood correctly you want notpad to be the default opener for php files.Right clisk on the .php file and select properties. In the "general" tab where it says "opens with" select "change". In the lower left corner check "always use the selected program to open this kind of file".Browse for notpad and double click it.If it isn't Mr. Seven it's not.

itconstruct - Ok... So let's see if I got this straight. You want to create your own file extension - say .FOO - and have it open with a given program.Easy...Create a file of the type you want and save it to disk with the name AND extension you want. You maysee a prompt that says if you change the extension, it may make the file unusuable. That's OK.. Click OK.Now then, you've got a text file with the name Test.FOO sitting somewhere. The next to do would be to click on the file to open it.You should see a dialog box that now says something to the effect of Windows doesn't have a clue about what to do with this file. Do you want to search the internet for something or do you want to pick one from a list.Click on Select a program from a list of installed programs. This will pop up another dialog box with a list of programs. Pick Notepad ++. Make sure that there IS a check in the box that says "Always use this program to open this kind of file." and Click OK. The icon should change to one for other files associated with Notepad ++ and the file should then open with that program.

Thank you this is what I wanted. This has worked. The other solution by Mr Seven is what I had already tried to do and does not work if the file extension is listed in the set associations page.I.T.
