Hi Dave on the Wirral, 1. What is the exact error message you receive?2. Is ‘error fix’ an application? Method 1:You may check in a clean boot state if you can identify if any services are interfering. To perform the clean boot follow the step 1 mentioned in the below article and then try checking in this clean boot state -http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353If the issue gets resolved check which non-Microsoft service or program is causing the problem; referring to the article and following other steps. After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:a. Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.b. On the General tab, click the Normal Startup option, and then click OK.c. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.Method 2:If the issue persists I would suggest you to check if you face the same issue on a different user account or administrator account. Hope this helps. Thanks,Meghmala – Microsoft SupportVisit our Microsoft Answers Feedback Forum and let us know what you think

Errorfix is a registry cleaning application. I have now done a regedit and have drilled down to @shared DLLs and could not open the file. I got the message - 'cannot open Shared DLLs, Error whilst opening Key'I assume that I have a corrupt (Shared DLLs) file, any advice on how to recover and replace this file. Regards Dace

You might have a permissions problem on that Key. After drilling down to the key (with Regedit), try right-clicking on the key and selecting "Permissions" then click on "Advanced". Select user and click "Edit" to see current permissions. On my machine, Administrators should have Full control and Users have "Query Value", "Enumerate Subkeys", "Notify" and "Read Control" only. This is not just a file, this is a part of your System Registry. If it is corrupted, then your only two alternatives are to restore it from a backup (such as using "System Restore") or re-install Windows on your machine. Avoid registry "cleaners" -- their potential for damage is extremely high compared to the "good" that they do. If you *must* use registry cleaners, then it is imperative that you back up your Registry beforehand using a utility such as freewareERUNT and know how to restore your registry from this backup in case something goes wrong."How to restore Windows XP to a previous state" (System Restore) < http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084 >HTH, JW

Thanks, it looks like a restore of Windows is my only option. I tried going back using Sytem Restore but to no avail. Dave
