Copying large files over the network with Bitlocker enabled - very strange error messages in Vista - does it work in W7?
This post could belong in Networking, but it seems to be BitLocker related since I only started having the problem since I enabled bitlocker on laptops with Vista SP1. I've had this problem on 32bit and 64bit editions on different harware, same make and model though, HP 8510P laptop.Trying to copy large files from the C:\ drive which is bitlockered to a network share. By large I usually have the problem with near to 1 Gb or larger on the LAN or with smaller files if copying over the WAN. The problem seemsrelated to how long the copy takes more than anything. At random points during the copy (same copy repeated fails at a different point each time) a dialog comes up that says the file on the C:\ drive can't found, I should check that the network is working and try again. Trying again doesn't work at all until I exit Explorer and start a new session.Sometimes copying the file toa USB drive which isn't encrypted works better to copy over the network but it can fail too.Only this way the time remaining calculator goes up to several thousand days and I have to use Task Manager to kill the process.Copying between the disk drives is really quick and works every time.Has anyone else seen this, tried a simiar operation in Windows 7?

Hi,Do you get the same result when you copy TO a bitlocker drive? How about copying to/from an unencrypted drive.Any errors showing up in Event Viewer? Victor Constantinescu - MVP Security, MCTS

Hi Victor, The event log has no mention of anything at the time this error occurs. I've also found the copying from the bitlocker drive remotely (ie swap client/server roles) worked fine at the time copy from the client wouldn't work over the network at all. Although copying to an unencryptedUSB drive worked OK. It seems to point to an explorer issue and only to network destination, except that I have only ever had this probem on a computer with bitlocker enabled and I've had it happen on multiple computers (32bit & 64bit). Also deleted my profile recently and started afresh.I have found other users with bitlockercan copy OKwith an ad-hoc test of a large file.Lets just say, after Vista, I have high expectations of W7!Cheers.

Ihad similar problems in Vista without Bilocker. I my case uninstalling MS Virtual PC solved the problem (I assume an incompatiblity of its network drivers with the Realtek Ethernet drivers).

I did just uninstall Virtual PC 2007 SP1 and tried the copy again. No Joy, thanks for the clue though.Even on a 1Gb LAN it copies over 1Gb of a 5.6Gb ISO file and blows up with unable to access the filepath on C: drive and I should check my network connection. The try again button resumes the copy from the start and it fails again at a different spot.Copy speed in the details window is only aorund 16-17Mb/sec which is about half what it should be on the 1Gb LAN to W2K8 server.Cheers, Mark.
