I downloaded Internet Explorer 8.0 yesterday and I don't know if it was coincidental or not but my contact list in Yahoo was hacked and spam was sent out to all contacts. What steps do I need to take to prevent this from reoccuring? Thanks. It really doesn't matter at this point whether it was coincidental or whether the download contained an infection. The most probably cause is the result of a password stealing trojan.Reboot the computer in safe mode with networking. Click on the second link below and download Malwarebytes. Update Malwarebytes and perform a full scan. Choose to quarantine anything found. Once complete click on the third link below and download Superantispyware Portable. Spam sent out to all contacts from your Yahoo e-mail is no way related to the download of IE8.Cybercriminals send these e-mails by identity theft andsocial engineering. It is a type of deception designed to steal your valuable personal data such as credit card numbers, and other account data and passwords from your friends and family in the contact list. Steps to take:Step 1: Report the incidentContact the following authorities:· Report to Yahoo Corp about the scam.· In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission. Report the circumstances to theFTC: National Resource for Identity Theft.· You can also report the phishing scam to the Anti-Phishing Working Group and to the FTC atEmail removed for privacy.Step 2: Change all your passwords· ReadStrong passwords: How to create and use them.· Start with passwords that are related to financial institutions or information.Step 3: Use the most up-to-date tools· Install the latest e-mail software with spam and anti-phishing capabilities like Microsoft Office Outlook or others to help identify and warn you about suspicious e-mails. · Use theSmartScreen Filter in Internet Explorer 8 to help detect unsafe and potentially unsafe Web sites as you browse. @A Thameem Marking your own answer as "The answer" will not enhance your points. As I have noticed this is a habit for you I will respectfully ask you to leave that decision to the OP or to a moderator.Regards,JoelI don't vote for myself I'm not here for the points. The OP or a moderator should be the one to confront him. It's none of your business.

hey joelj1964 ,Thanks for pointing it out. It was not about points, it was to propose the reader as an answer. However i was not aware that the answer has to proposed by OP or a moderator. Once again thanks for putting a light on the same. Your feedbacks are appreciated.ThameemObviously it doesn't HAVE to be marked by the OP or a moderator. Nevertheless, it is best if left to the OP if and when they return. I completely disagree with a post being marked by a moderator. However, nothing can and/or will be done to prevent such. I hope you didn't find my request offensive. Your instructions to the OP were very detailed, informative and professional. I just think marking the post as "The Answer" is best if done by the OP. When done so, it is much easier for those searching for answers to an issue identical to the original OP to find the solution.I don't vote for myself I'm not here for the points.
