Connot print to Shared DotMatrix Printer
Installed a new PC w/Win7 Pro (x86) in a Domain network. Connected to a 32b Shared Dot-Matrix printer on a server. All went well except it will not print. It spools the job then returns an Error - Printing message. The test print works directly from the server (WinServer 2k3), but not from the client attached to the shared printer. When 'capturing' the shared printer with the Net Use command, a "dir > (capttured port)" will print on the shared printer, anything from within Windows will not. I have tried generic drivers to no avail. No problem printing to shared laser printers. I have applied Win7 SP1 to no effect.

Alan, As you suspected winprint is the print processor. I have unchecked the "Enable advanced printing features." Does that disable EMF printing? They are still listed as defalut data type NE EMF 1.003, 1.006, 1.007, 1.008. Not sure how to disable them..... So far...no change...Still erroring out when printing from the client. This time, the server side errored out very quickly 1-2 Seconds...the client side did not report the error for almost 25-30 seconds...still erroring however...... Tom

do you see the error printing on the cl;ient machine or does the data leave the client and the failure is on the server machine. Check the server event log for Print errors. Which printer is this?Alan Morris Windows Printing Team

The printer is an Okidata ML Pacemark 3410. I have tried using IBM Propronter and Generic 9-Pin DotMatrix Drivers. The Job appears to go to the server as I can find no events in the client event log and the "Print Queue" pops up on the server as well as the client. Again...no problem printing from the server. The only events in the server log are "EventID 9 Priner Okidata ML Pacemark 3410 was set" A print test from the client shows up in the "Print Queue" on the server almost immediately with a status of "Printing," followed in less than a second with a status change to "Error - Printing." Nothing in the Event Viewer until the print job is cancelled, then two entries, one indicating that Queue had been purged, and another indicating that the specific print job had been deleted. Tom

I was hoping for event 6161 or 10. Which Print Processor is the PaceMark driver using? Advanced Tab of the printer properties. I'm assuming winprint. Winprint is the default print processor for Generic driver. Disable EMF printing on the print server to see if the GDI rendering path is hitting an issue. Uncheck, "Enable advanced printing features", on the print server printer properties Advanced.Alan Morris Windows Printing Team

Hi Tom, That issue may be caused by the incompatible driver issue. Please go to OKI website and download the Windows 7 dirver: http://my.okidata.com/home.nsf/solutions%26support?openframeset Please Note: Since the website is not hosted by Microsoft, the link may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this information. Follow this article to reinstall the printer: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprohardware/thread/2c055ac8-b79e-4f30-a53d-798e69ed8d2f If there is no Windows 7 driver, try to install Vista driver in Vista Compatible Mode, also you can contact printer manufacturer for the driver. If the issue persists, please try to plug the printer direct to Windows 7 to see if it works. Hope that helps. Regards, Leo Huang TechNet Subscriber Support in forum. There are a couple of things that could be happening. Since you have a 32bit machine sharing the printer to a 32bit Windows 7 machine, the 32bit driver that works fine on 2003 should be copied to the client. This driver may not work on Windows 7. There is no driver for the 3410 included with Windows 7. There is a driver Oki included in Vista that is on Windows Update. The fact that the data reaches the print server is a GOOD sign. The format of the data as shown the print job properties should be RAW in you current configuration. EMF if you check Enabled advanced printing features. I assume you have the the printer connected to the server using a paralle cable. I do not know the interfaces supported by the device. If you are using some other way connecting the device please update this info. Enough for now.Alan Morris Windows Printing Team

Leo, Thanks for the suggestion, but the Okidata site indicates that the Oki3410 driver is native to Windows 7. I have tried installing and uninstalling several times. I have even tried generic dot-matrix printer drivers with the same (negative) result. Rats! Tom

I assume you installed the Windows 7 version of the driver on the 2003 print server.Alan Morris Windows Printing Team

Alan, I have just used the driver that came with Server 2k3. I have not been able to find any 'separate' driver to install. Is there a way to install a driver on Server 2k3 that is native to Win7? Addidionally, since even the 'generic dot matrix' drivers don't work, doesn't that indicate something other than just drivers? Tom
