Connection with the server was reset
I just bought a new computer, running W7Pro(64), IE8. Lotsa memory, lotsa processor power. I've rebuilt the softwar twice. I keep running into one problem I can't understand I go to download a software package (often, from MS) and I get an instantaneous message "Connection with server was reset". In fact, most often, it never gets the download window open. It's also unpredictable. I can replicate it over and over for a given site, but on the second rebuild of the system, I downloaded numerous very large downloads from MS and elsewhere with no problem. Today, it started happening again. I'm beginning to suspect maybe an MS automatic update hits me and that causes the problem to begin. I"m running MS Security Essentials, but I ran that on my old computer with no such issues (Win7 Ultimate 32bit.) Anybody got a research angle on this, or where I can get more details on the error (logs on my computer?)Jim

Hi Jim, What is your connection type? Wired or wireless? If you have the router, please reset it and update the frimware from the manufacture's site. If you are using wireless, try wired connection. Also update the network adapter driver from Device Manager. If the issue persists, please run IE8 with no add-ons and reset IE to check the result. Click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tool -> Internet Explorer with no add-ons. Reset Internet Explorer settings http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Reset-Internet-Explorer-settings Regards, NikiPlease remember to click "Mark as Answer" on the post that helps you, and to click "Unmark as Answer" if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Niki, I am connected wirelessly (N) to a Fry's (D-Link maybe D-610?) Wireless N router. Its firmware is up to date (though I do think Fry's is a bit negligent in keeping up with the OEM's updates....) I have updated the computer's network adapter, and I'll look again. I gather from your recommendations that you think this is a software or hardware issue as opposed to a configuration issue. The problem has abated. I have been able to download MS Virtual Desktop and install it. I assumed that my problem was a setting or group of settings that (in concert with my firewall) prevented certain actions. Now that I haved a virtual machine, I can load up IE8 vanilla and us it if I have the problem again, see if it is settings.... Thanks, Niki. No one else has responded. I'd be in bad shape if it hadn't abated.... Jim

Niki, Well, I guess it must be an addin. The issue recurred. I was trying to download from an MS sight. Failed again. So, I went to my new VM (which is as vanilla as you can get....) and the download worked just fine. So, I did as you suggested and ran IE8 with no addins. Worked like a charm. So, I tried to look into what addins I'm running. Holy Cow! I'm running dozens. Most look innocuous. Any starting points? I've got google, hp, lots of MS, I don't know where to start? I did disable real time virus prot (Windows Defender). Had no effect. At least I know how to handle it, if not cure it.... Thanks.Jim

Hi Jim, Since the issue is related to add-ons, you can disable all add-ons and enable one by one to narrow down the issue. If you find the problematic add-ons, right click it to get more information.
