Connection Reset Problem
Any time I download a Large File >100 MB I get a connection reset error. This occurs weather I am connected via the ethernet adapter or the wireless adapter. It occurs weather I am using FTP via "Filezilla" or IE 8 or IE 9 or firefox or Chrome. When large files are transfered from another computer on the LAN the transfer speed will start at 40 MBS and run for a while then drop to 0 and slowly start up again. I have read and followed the instructions on previous posts. I have updated all drivers and all SP1 Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit updates. At this point I am ready to reinstall the OS. Any suggestions other than reinstall?

Hi randy.cableipnet, Thanks for posting in TechNet forum. Does issue happen only when downloading file from FTP? What the detailed error message you got? Any related logs in your Event Viewer? Could you successfully download it bofore? Enter into the Safe Mode with networking to check if the downloading works. Also try a Clean Boot: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 Run the following commands in an elevated prompt; netsh int ip reset netsh winsock reset When you download via Internet Explorer, click Tools - Internet Options - Advanced Tab, make sure you check "Use Passive FTP". If that's FTP server is published through Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000. Please refer to this Hotfix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885420 In addition, if all the above doesn't work, I think you can use the Network Monitor to capture the traffic, then find which could cause the issue. You can download the Network Monitor here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=983b941d-06cb-4658-b7f6-3088333d062f&displaylang=en Regards, Miya TechNet Subscriber Support in forum. Update To date I have tried the following: Clean Boot with all services turned off except for essential Microsoft services. Connections still lost before downloads complete. The error logs are emptied prior to a download attempt and there are no errors reported during or after a download attempt. Multiple WEB browsers and FTP clients have been used all in Passive mode with no change. The Apple I-Tunes update service fails with a connection reset error. Network monitor on the client computer and Wireshark running on a different computer were used to capture both headers and full packets, no errors were reported during the FTP transaction, other than a Connection Lost from the different FTP servers. As an experiment a “Live” version of LINUX was loaded via DVD. Going to the same FTP sites all downloads were completed successfully. This experiment rules out a hardware problem. I have checked to make sure that all of the drivers are updated and all OS updates are up to date. Unless you have some further suggestion; I am going to do a clean reinstall of the OS and restore the data from backups. Thank you for your help.

Hi Randy, My name is Scott from Micorsoft network email support team. Based on my experience, when the number of concurrent connections on server exceeded its carrying capacity, it will send reset packet to make some connections down. Since the ftp transmission is too slow, after some time, it may be resetted by the ftp server. Is the ftp server public server or the server in your network? What is the operation system of the ftp server? If the ftp server is the server in your network, please try to disable "EnableTCPChimney", "EnableTCPA", "EnableRSS" on both server side and your windows 7 client side by the following steps: 1. Open cmd as administrator on the server and client, then type the following command: netsh int tcp set global chimney=disable netsh int tcp set global rss=disable netsh int tcp set global autotuning=disable 2. Add the following values on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters to your server and client: a.EnableRSS = 0 b.EnableTCPA = 0 c.DisableTaskOffload = 1 3. Then restart your server and client to see if the issue could be fixed. If the ftp server is a public server, please just disable these feature on your windows 7 client side. If the issue still persists after that, please also try the workaround provided by Miya previously to reset the TCP/IP stack on the windows 7 client. Open cmd as administrator on the client, then type the following command: netsh int ip reset netsh winsock reset Thanks for your time!

Still unable to determine the cause of the problem. The OS was reloaded and clean installs of all applications. The computer no longer resets connections during downloads.
