You may wish to have a run through the following articles: How to troubleshoot Internet Explorer issues in Windows Vista and in Windows XP How to troubleshoot network connectivity problems in Internet Explorer How to optimize Internet Explorer Also, consider checking performance with another browser such as Firefox, that can help identify if it's an IE-specific concern, or a general system/network concern.

I run IE8 on XP, Vista, and Windows 7, and have no problems with its performance. Performance issues with Internet Explorer can be checked with the aforementioned links. Most performance issues are attributable to third-party browser extensions and the like.
