Connecting to the Internet on a wired shared network
Does W7 need to be configured to connect to the internet using an "always on/up" connection? Or is it as simple as plugging a cable from the W7 machine into a working router that has other machines already in session with the internet? I'm migrating from XP to W7. XP requires a new network connection be configured for an internet connection that is always up and does not need signon credentials. I can't find any reference to this kind of connection in W7, hence the question. TIA for your help. Bob Helms

Change the WORKGROUP on the W7 machine to the one that is already setup on the router and other machines. All PC's are required to be on same workgroup."Computing is great experience, as long as we remember, that it is a machine the requires human input to operate correctly< Bobsan

no their not......and yes you should be able to just plug it in....if....- there is a dhcp server avalible ( typically on the router/ or server if your on a domain) if not assign a static ip address, usually you want it in the same range as the others, i.e. 192.168.0.whatever- you have the proper drivers installed....you may have to find those a the mfg website

Thank you for confirming that elusive tidbit of information. Can you please tell me where that information is documented. I have looked and searched for weeks and I cannot find it. Everybody wants to (naturally) talk and discuss wireless setup and use but there are still some of us "old fashioned" Ethernet users left. Bob Helms
