Connecting to XP From Vista
I thought I had FINALLY fixed my issues with trying to connect my Vista laptop to my XP machine. I finally had to remove the XP machine from the domain I had set up and joined the XP machine to a workgroup. I joined the Vista macine to the same group. On the XP machine, I created a local user (OSAKA\user1). I made this local user an admin on the machine. I created a share on the XP machine. I gave everyone full control on the share. When trying toexplore the share, I'm asked for credentials. When I provide the credentials and password (OSAKA\user1), I get an error saying "Windows Logon Was Unsuccessful".I don't get it!! I've even tried to log on using the local administrator account on the Vista machine and still get a logon failure.A. M. Robinson

Hi, Thank you for your post. May I know the following: 1. If you enabled simple file sharing, please check if Guest account has also been enabled. You can also disable the simple file sharing and reconfigure the sharing on the Windows XP computer with the following Knowledge Base: How to disable simple file sharing and how to set permissions on a shared folder in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307874/en-us 2. Please disable the share and re-configure the sharing on the Windows XP computer and ensure that you have assigned the Full-Control permissions to Everyone on both Sharing and Security tabs of the share folders properties,. 3. Ensure the firewall on the computers are configured to allow the Files and Printer sharing. You can also disable the firewall on both computers to see if it works. 4. Please check if you can access the share by the both type \\computer name\folder and XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX\folder. If you have another computer on the network, please try to access the Windows XP computer with this one, and let me know the results as well as the OS version on the third computer. Meanwhile, I also want to share the following document about configuring file sharing: How to configure file sharing in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304040/en-us Hope this helps.Nicholas Li - MSFT

The firewalls are turned off on both machines, I am able to browse to the share just fine when using my other XP laptop, I have dropped and recreated the share several times and still get the same issue. Also, regardless if I browse via computer name or I.P. address, I am still asked for credentials and I still get "Logon Unsuccessful".A. M. Robinson

Hi, Please check the simple file sharing with the previous step #1 and let us know the results. Meanwhile, please also capture a screenshot when the error "Logon Unsuccessful" appears. Capture a screenshot ============== 1) Press the Print Screen key (PrtScn) on your keyboard. 2) Click the "Start" menu, type "mspaint" in the Search Bar and Press Enter. 3) In the Paint program, click the "Edit" menu, click "Paste", click the "File" menu, and click "Save". 4) The "Save As" dialogue box will appear. Type a file name in the "File name:" box, for example: "screenshot". 5) Make sure "JPEG (*.JPG;*.JPEG;*.JPE;*.JFIF)" is selected in the "Save as type" box, click Desktop on the left pane and then click "Save". Please use Windows Live SkyDrive (http://www.skydrive.live.com/) to upload the file and share its URL with me. Thanks.Nicholas Li - MSFT
