Connecting to XP
Is it possible right now to make a network between XP and Windows 7?As it was working before on Vista Ultimate but after I upgraded it says the network location can't be found when I double click my other computer.

First, can you do a simple ping to the remote machine? And can you try connecting from Win7 to XP; and from XP to Win7? From my past experiences, disabling IPv6 on both machines solved quite some issues, so maybe you might want to try that and see if it works? Jabez Gan [MVP] - http://www.msblog.org

XP to W7 is working. But I disabled the firewall on XP and now it connects but asks for a network password. I never had this problem before on Vista as I had no password.I try putting my brothers user name:AdministratorPassword is blank. And how can I disable IPv6?

I have Win7 networked to XP without issues. The only problem I have had is if I map the network drives to W7. It forgets them when I restart the PC. (It still displays them but tried to loopback to itself instead of going straight to the the other box). I set up networking on W7 exactly the same as I did on my Vista Ultimate x64. I.e. setting my workgroup to HOME (the name of my network, took me ages to think it up ;)) then simply sharing the drives via Right Click>Share With>Specific People... My XP network is already set up as it has been for years now, never had a problem. I can then connect to the network from W7 either by typing the device name direct into My Computer (\\SERVER\ in my case) or by going to network on the left. You may want to try disabling W7 Firewall to see if the behaviour repeats itself.

The problem is that my brother can connect to me but if I click his computer I get this:http://i44.tinypic.com/2uxz5uv.pngAnd I have no password. Same problem with firewall off.Nothing was changed on the XP computer since before I upgraded mine from Vista to Win7, as on Vista it was working 100%.

I have a similar issue with Mapped drives. It seems to be looping back as I mentioned before (as per the domain entry). Try typing \\Home\ into the address bar to see if it connects that way.

I can network from the WIndows 7 to the XP machine no problem. WHen I try the other way around it prompts me for username and password. On the XP machine I enter the computername\username and password and it just pops up again. It never gives me access to the files on the Windows 7 machine from XP. It is also EXTREMELY slow in even prompting me for a username and password on the XP machine after I put in the IP address on the Windows 7 machine - does Windows 7 not include hidden shares - e.g. \\192.168.20.101\c$ ?

Subnet mask on the XP box was 255.255.255.0, on the Windows 7 box it was 255.255.0.0Please tell me where this setting adjustment is made. I am failing to make a network connection from an XP SP3 machine to W7 - and have tried everything else!

Hello peter carltonThis settings are required onlyif network is configured manually. If network is configured by DHCP server, that may be your home router or DSL modem all settings are made automatically. How you want to access W7? If you want to access W7 files and printers you must set following advanced sharing options:- Turn on network discovery- Turn on file and printer sharingTo set these options open Network and sharing center, then from left pane click on Change advanced sharing settings and set options aboveIf you need to login to W7 files and printerswithout a password set also following advanced sharing option:- Turn off password protected sharing

I have the same issue with 2 laptops: one with WinXP SP3 and another with Windows 7 RTM. They both in the same workgroup and have the same subnet mask. The Win7 laptop could not see the WinXP in Exploer\Network.I can ping WinXP laptop from Win7 and even can try to logon into it by typing \\laptop8\c$ in the Explorer. At this point the window pops up where I should enter credentials, however even if I enter them the same dialog re-appear. Any ideas how to fix this?
