Connecting to Hyper V on Windows 8.1 from another Windows 8.1 machine

So the scenario is I have my home PC which is running Windows 8.1 Pro and has a Microsoft Dynamics AX demo VM running on it.

Now what I would like to do is connect to that VM from my laptop which is also running Windows 8.1 Pro.

Both machines are on the same home workgroup however I am unable to connect to the main pc from the laptop.

I have been through various scenarios of setting up Server Manager but it would appear this only works if you are trying to connect to a machine running windows server not windows 8.1 eg http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2010/11/11/configuring-remote-management-of-hyper-v-server-in-a-workgroup.aspx

I am unable to run the VM on my laptop directly as the machine is not powerful enough. If I try to use virtual amchine connection I get the error "you do not have the required permission to complete this task. Contact the administrator of the authorization policy for the computer '######'"

Can anyone confirm if this is possible or not?

Thanks

This is not really a designed for scenario.

Also, out of the box most of the remote management services that Server has as locked down on client.  The case is that server is more likely to be physically isolated / protected and client is not.

So, you have to open all of the necessary firewall ports on your client box (at the minimum) and then enable WinRM and a listener.

Or, you could just RDP to your other box and use the local management console.

thanks for the reply

I believe the instructions i've followed do those actions you mentioned (firewall, WinRM and listener) however still to no avail.

I think the issue is that running the hyperv client on the client it tries to connect to the other machine using the laptops credentials and obvioulsy not being on a domain this causes an issue.  On my laptop i'm logged with my windows Live account and even though an equivalent is set up on the desktop i believe it doesn't see this as the same account when connecting.

I think one possible solution ive read somewhere (still to try it) is to use the "administrator" user account and ensure the passwords are the same on both machines then log onto the desktop as administrator and try to connect to the desktop via the HyperV client.

Remote desktop is one option but i was hoping i could get this working
