Connecting to Apple airport express wireless routers in Vista Home Basic.
I have recently boughta laptop with Vista Home Basic. As other members of my household already have Macs, we have an apple airport express wireless router, butmy laptop does not detect the signal. I know that the wireless card works as I have connected to public wifi spots, and the laptop detects wireless signals coming from nearby properties, as I live in a block of flats. So far I have asked many people for help with this issue and nobody has been able to give me an answer. I have been told that all wireless cards should be compatible with all wireless routers so long as the computer is configured correctly. If you cannot help with this problem, could you direct me to somebody that can. Many thanks in advance.

basically, you have to make sure that the network name, the channel and the security scheme and password match. I'm currently using 128 bit WEPwhich works fine. I recommend looking at the Apple Airport Express Support Troubleshooting page for further step by step details.

Hi Elaine, Thank you for the post. For your reference, I've included an article describing how to connect to a wireless network in Windows Vista as below. How to connect to a wireless network in Windows Vista http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928429 However, it may not be a Windows Vista wireless configuration issue since I notice that the laptop can detect the signals from public Wi-Fi spots and nearby properties. In this case, I suggest contacting Apple support to confirm if certain settings are required so that Windows Vista machine can detect this wireless device. Ive include the contact information about Apple support as below for your reference: http://www.apple.com/support/airport/ http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/specs.html Apple Airport Express with AirTunes Support Forum http://www.expansys.com/f.aspx?i=115809 Note: This response contains a reference to a third party World Wide Web site. Dear Joson,I have the same problem. My Dell laptop with Windows Vista cannot connect to the wireless network using the Airport Express router. My laptop does detect the network, I can see it in the list of wireless networks available at home, but when I type the password (which is correct and verified 100%) it only gives me "limited connectivity".I called Apple Customer Service and downloaded and installed the most recent version of "Airport Utility". Airport Utility cannot detect the network signal even though the router is just next to it.I am very frustrated about this. Apple says the router works with Windows Vista but that appears to be untrue.I don't know where the problem is. Is it Vista or the router?Ngustavo

Wow...okay so it is 3 years later but I am having the same problem as Ngustavo. I have an HP laptop running Windows Vista Home and just bought an Airport Express wireless router because it was supposed to be the best for a mixed OS networks (Windows and Mac). I have two macs that have no problem connecting to this new router but my Windows machine won't. It sees the network but won't connect. Any progress in the last 3 years?? ANYONE?? Thanks in advance.

The only way I've managed to connect my Vista PC to my Airport Extreme is to set up a "guest" network; However, this is of only limited value, since the PC is not able to access shared network resources (e.g., printer, file server, etc...). It is able to get out to the internet though.
