Connecting Vista to Internet via XP and ICS
Hi! My main computer running Windows XP is connected the the Internet via ADSL. I have ICS set up on it to allow other computers on my network to get to the Internet, which worked fine. I have upgraded one of the computers with Vista RC2. Although it can see the PC with XP and they can map drives to each other, it will not connect to the Internet. Reading the help, I have: 1) Changed the workgroup name on both machines to WORKGROUP 2) Changed the IP address on both machines away from 192.168.0.x to 192.168.10.x 3) I have turned down the settings on Zonealarm on the XP machine (off for trusted and medium for internet connection). 4) I have added the Vista PC to the trusted domain for Zonealarm. Has anyone any ideas!! Thanks, Simon

Why change the address range to 192.168.10.X? ICS assigns a 192.168.0.1 IP to the ICS server PC by default. http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/ It would be easiest, IMHO,if you simply use a DHCP assigned IP on your Vista box and let ICS assign an IP.

Thanks for the feedback Al. I changed the IP address after reading the Vista help which tells you not to use the192.168.0.x range. I have tried it with both ranges without success. Thanks for the web address - I have had a read but cant see anything new in there. I don't have any problems with ME clients, just the Vista one, so I was wondering if there is anything Vista specific that has been changed. I'll double check about DHCP. Simon

Have you considered purchasing a broadband router and not use ICS? Here in the US they are pretty inexpensive now a days and certainly easier, IMHO, to setup/use/troubleshoot than using ICS. Plus you don't need the ICS PC to even be powered on in order for the other PC to have access to the internet... Beyond that here is a help page for setting up a static IP if that is what you want to do. Its written for XP but the theory is the same... http://www.portforward.com/networking/static-xp.htm AFAIK, you can not change the XP ICS address from the default 192.168.0.1 address...Although I certainly could be wrong about that...

Good advice about the router, I was on a tight budget so wanted to avoid forking out 50. The vista machine only needs to connect occassionally for updates and I know when it is accessing the net.
