Connect to printer: No driver found - Win 7 client not checking Windows Update for driver...
Hi all I'm getting the above error when I try to add a network printer to a couple of machines, one running Win XP Pro SP2 32bit and the other Win 7 Pro 32bit . The printer in question is a HP LaserJet 4050N and its installed to a Windows Server 2008 Standard 64bit machine. It's shared from there and listed in the shared printers directory. When I try and add this to the Win 7 client machine, they can see it fine in the directory but I get the 'Connect to printer: No driver found' message that's referred to on here a few times. Now, I'm not so much looking for a solution to get this printer installed, but rather what settings I have to change to make the client machine check windows update automatically for the driver when it gets stuck. What's baffling me is that I have other machines on the network running Win 7 Pro and when I go through the exact same process, although Win 7 recognises that the driver installed on the Server is not compatible, it immediately checks online via windows update and after of couple of minutes, downloads the correct driver and bingo, printer installed. Why don't all the machines do this? I've logged onto both machines using the domain administrator so assume there is a setting somewhere locally in Win 7 that I can change so that all the machines turn to windows update/check online when they realise they need to obtain the correct driver themselves. For the record, I can't manually download the correct driver for this printer from HP and browse and install that way because I'm prompted for a .INF file, which the HP driver download doesn't include. Thanks RS

Hi, Please try the following steps to troubleshoot the issue. 1. Click “Devices and Printers”. 2. Click “Add a printer”. 3. Choose “Add a local printer” and click on “Create a new port”. 4. Select “Local Port” and click “Next”. 5. Type in "[\\computer name\printer name]" (without quotation marks) for the Port Name and click “OK”. Example: If the computer you wish to connect to is named ComputerA and the printer is called PrinterA then the path would be \\ComputerA\PrinterA 6. Please select a correct driver from the list. If the model is not listed, please click the “Windows Update” button. Wait for the process finishes and try to find the driver again. Thanks, Novak

Ah I love simple solutions. This worked on the XP machine, however on the Win 7 machine I get a 'Local port: Access denied' error. The printer is shared to Everyone so there shouldn't be a permission issue. Just to make sure I've added the user currently logged on at the troublesome machine and given him full permissions and I did get an access denied dialog box. I assume its a local permissions error in that case, but having said that the user is a local administrator. Thanks for your reply.
