General Internet Connectivity Troubleshooting:1. Answer the First and Second Questions of Troubleshooting:First Question Of Troubleshooting: If the problem is new, what changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't?The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?Be sure the computer is clean - http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware 2. If nothing has changed and the computer is clean, what antivirus/security programs are you running? Have AVG 8 and/or Zone Alarm? Both these programs have had issues that caused Internet connectivity problems. I don't recommend either of these programs, but if you want to keep them check on the mftrs.' support websites.3. If #2 isn't applicable:a. Unplug the router.b. Unplug the modem. (If you have a DOCSIS 3 modem with battery backup, press the Reset button to reset the modem so the lights go off.)c. Wait 60 seconds.d. Plug in the modem (or wait until the Reset is finished) and wait until all the lights are on.e. Plug in the router and wait until all the lights are on.Do you have Internet connectivity now? If not:4. Connect your computer directly to the cable/DSL modem. Do you now have Internet connectivity? If yes, there is a problem with the router. They don't last forever. Replace it.If there is no Internet when your computer is connected directly to the cable/DSL modem, call your ISP because something is wrong with either the cable/DSL modem or your Internet service.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

If there was no antivirus installed on the computer then the probability that it is severely infected is extremely high. Infection is one of the prime reasons a Windows machine can't connect correctly to the Internet. It is unlikely that anything short of a full clean install will be useful, but first try going through all the malware removal steps at the link I already gave you. Don't skip any of the preparatory work. Make sure you back up your data to an external hard drive first.http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html -Clean Install How-To http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Reinstalling_Windows -What you will need on-hand If you can't do the work yourself (and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea), take the machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of BigComputerStore/GeekSquad). Please be aware that not all local shops are skilled at removing malware and even if they are, your computer may be so infested that Windows will need to be clean-installed. If possible, have all your data backed up before you take the machine into a shop.I must stress that you should not take what I have written as a definitive diagnosis. I cannot see or test your computer from here. I'm giving you my opinion about your computer based on my professional experience as a computer tech and on what you've written.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!
