Connect a Windows XP PC to a printer on a router.
I have set up a small peer-to-peer network with 2 PCs and a printer (Samsung CLP550N) connected via a router (Belkin). One PC is running Windows 7, the other is running Windows XP. I have been able to easily add the printer to the Windows 7 PC. However, I am having difficulties adding the printer to the Windows XP PC. Using the Add Printer Wizard, and selecting a network printer, I run into problems on the Specify a Printer page. When I click Browse I cannot see the printer at all (even though I can see it when I look in the router information via the browser). When I click Connect To This Printer and use the TCP/IP address (10.1.1.5), I get an error message "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Either the printer name was typed incorrectly, or the specified printer has lost its connect to the server". I have tried a variety of inputs using the TCP/IP address and the default ID for the printer SEC0000F0ACA72E.(i.e. \\10.1.1.5\SEC0000F0ACA72.printer). (I do not have a printer name as a secondary problem is that I haven't been able to work out how to change the printer's ID to something more understandable.) I have researched all the documents I can on Windows XP (i.e. Windows XP Inside Out)Could some-one please assist me by telling me how to:1. Change the printer ID to a printer name2. Connect a Windows XP PC to the printer which is connected to the router.1 person got this answerI do too

1. First try installing the printer drivers software directly on the XP box. Make sure you select "Network Printer". Usually the printer will be seen during the installation routine. If it isn't... 2. Control Panel>Printers>Add Printer>Add Local Printer>New Port>Standard TCP/IP port. Enter the printer's IP address. The computer will "think" for a while and then give you a screen about the network card. Just hit Next. Then you'll get a screen where you can pick the printer make and model. Choose the correct one and finish out the wizard.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!
