Confused by new security block
Since I installed Windows 7, I occasionally get a confusing block when I try to logon to a website for which I have previously registered and have a password that has worked in the past. More often than not, things work just as they used to. I get the website's logon screen, enter the UID and password, and I'm on my way. Sometimes, however, I get new Windows Security dialog pops up that says "The server (server name) requires a username and password. Warning: This server is requesting that your username and password be sent in an insecure manner (basic authenticantion withut a secure connection). Then it gives me "User name" and "Password" boxes to fill in. When I get this window, the username and password never seems to work even after I check the password and retype it several times. I wind up calling the website and asking them to reset my logon. * Is it just me, or is there a problem? * Can I avoid this dialog?Gary Burton

Hi, Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet forums. This issue might occur due to either 3rd party security provider or on the server side. If your default explorer is not internet explorer, please set it as default. If it is due to third party software, it is suggested to remove security provider from LSA key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa key For better understanding, refer to http://blogs.technet.com/b/ad/archive/2009/05/26/thoughts-on-single-sign-on-and-credential-providers.aspx. I am using Internet Explorer 8 as default in Win7 64-bit. I don’t have that key in my registry. I have HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa, but no "....\lsa key". Also there is no "...."lsa\key"Gary Burton

I checked the key and could find no third party security providers there. Also, I just successfully logged on to a website through the dialog box in question. It may just be that whenever I have gotten gotten this dialog in the past, there has coincidentally been a problem with the UID or pw that I was unaware of, so I don't want anyone to waste any more time researching this. If I have more problems, I will post again. Sorry for the confusion, and thank you very much for your efforts. Gary Burton
