Confused about XP compatibility mode
I am currently running two XP applications in Vista Home Premium using XP compatibility mode. I have the same two applications also running in Windows 7 RC Ultimate. I've just been looking at a table giving a comparison of features in the various editions of Windows 7. This appears to show that XP mode is only included in the Professional and Ultimate editions, not in the Home Premium edition. Does this mean that the XP compatibility mode feature which is in Vista Home Premium and apparently in Windows 7 RC will not be included in the RTM version of Windows 7 Home Premium? Or is there some confusion here between XP compatibility mode and XP virtualisation.

Windows XP Mode and compatibility mode are two entirely different things. Compatibility mode exists as an option in all versionsof Vista and Windows 7 that simply invvolves adjusting settings to allow some legacy apps to run with the newer OSs. XP Mode refers to running XP as a theoretically seamless process via Windows Virtual PC. That, indeed, is only available in the higher versions of Windows 7. Stephen

As an addition to Stephens reply, Ingletonian, XP Virtualisation must also be supported by your motherboard. My machine is 2 years old and doesn't support the feature, although having said that I am not a great afn of Microsoft Virtual PC I much prefer VMware Workstation; sadly, though, VMware Workstation isn't free.John Barnett MVP: Windows XP Associate Expert: Windows Desktop Experience: Web: http://www.winuser.co.uk; Web: http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org; Web: http://vistasupport.mvps.org;

Thanks Stephen I was beginning to think that I had made a bad choice in my decision to pre-order Win 7 Home Premium.

VMWare Server is free if you apply for registeration. I use it. Supports Linux distroes as well as every Windows product I have tried. My lab PCs won't run Virtual PC according to the Hardware-Assisted Virtualization Detection tool found at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0ee2a17f-8538-4619-8d1c-05d27e11adb2&displaylang=en I have run win 98, win 2k, XP, Win 7, Win Server 2008 Standard, Ubuntu 10.0.4, Fedora 13, BackTrack 3 and 4, WTF Samurai on VMWare Server. Can't run them all at once but I have 4 1/2 year old PCs with 4 GB ram to work with.
