Configure Lync 2010 FE With new Lync 2013 Edge

All,

can we introduce first Lync 2013 Edge server in Existing Lync 2010 Environment which consists 1 Lync 2010 and 1 Lync 2010 Edge servers and later on point existing Lync 2010 FE server to New Lync 2013 Edge but removing old Edge 2010.

Thanks in advance.

Hi

The supported update option is to install Lync 2013 front end server to your topology before adding Lync 2013 edge servers. Adding Lync 2013 edge servers as the first server is not supported.

What are your reasons for wanting 2013 edge as opposed to 2010? Its not going to bring you any benefit.

thanks

As Mark mentioned, you cannot have Lync 2013 Edge without Lync 2013 front-end pool. You need to publish topology with Lync 2013 co-existence with Lync 2010 and deploy Edge server by exporting the topology onto edge server.

Thanks for the Reply,

Actually we are configuring the Lync Online Hybrid and i heard there are some issues with Directory search Etc with Lync 2010 Edge, hence wanted to just install the Edge 2013 First and get the Hybrid configured so that i dont need to change the federation from Lync 2010 Edge server to Lync 2013 edge lateron,

I am aware that we can configure the Lync Hybrid compatibility with Updated CU.

After configuring the hybrid we will move all the users to Lync Online and at last we will install Lync 2013 FE and move only the Ent Voice users from Lync 2010 FE to Lync 2013 FE.

Please let me know your View on this.

Thanks for for your reply on my other thread :)

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/e1865253-39aa-45a7-a5f6-af88a8905378/lync-2010-fe-with-lync-2013-edge-server?forum=ocsedge

so do you suggest to go for Hybrid setup with Lync 2010 or lync 2013 by introducing the FE/Edge ?

IF 2k10 then how we can move the Hybrid from Lync 2010 to lync 2013 edge server>

Thanks in advance.

Hi Tech_Bug,

In my opinion, its recommended to migrate to Skype for Business Server 2015 first and then enable Hybrid.

Note: Skype for Business Server 2015 and Edge are prerequisites for Skype Directory Search.

You can bring up a new Skype for Business Server 2015 pool and then migrate users to this new pool. You can then decommission the old Lync Server 2010 pool.

Best regards,

Eric

Hi

In my opinion you are better to migrate to Skype for Business now and then enable Hybrid. Simply introducing Lync 2013 edge servers are not going to give you any tangible benefits to users on Lync 2010. You can always enable Hybrid on 2010 now if you need immediate hybrid capabilities. When you introduce your new pool the hybrid configuration should be maintained as it is part of your global deployment settings and not need reconfiguring. The only configuring you will need to do is update your federation routes in your topology to use the new edge pool as the next hop, rather than 2010.

thanks

thanks for the Reply all,

i guess i should go with Lync 2013 FE or SFB 2015 FE along with edge, and configure the hybrid on it,

but can we directly move the users from Existing Lync 2010 FE Pool to Lync Online, or i will have to first move the users from Lync 2010 to Lync 2013/SFB 2015 Pool and then move them to Lync online ?

thanks in advance.

Hi

You should be able to move users directly to 365 from 2010 in this scenario

thanks

Hi Tech_Bug,

To configure your deployment for hybrid with Skype for Business Online, you need to have one of the following supported topologies:

  • A Skype for Business Server 2015 deployment with all servers running Skype for Business Server 2015.

  • A Lync Server 2013 deployment with all servers running Lync Server 2013.

  • Microsoft Lync Server 2010 with Cumulative Updates for Lync Server 2010: February 2013 applied, and the Skype for Business Server 2015 or Lync Server 2013 administrative tools installed on-premises. The federation Edge Server and next hop server from the federation Edge Server must be running Microsoft Lync Server 2010 with the latest cumulative updates.

    importantImportant:
The administrative tools should be installed on a separate server that has access to connect to the existing on-premises deployment. The Move-CsUser cmdlet to move users from your on-premises deployment to Skype for Business Online must be run from the administrative tools connected to your on-premises deployment.

Best regards,

Eric
