Conferencing Performance

Hi,

We have a small Lync setup consisting of a single Lync Enterprise FE server and a single Edge server.

Ive been doing some testing with Conferencing (2 users in the office in the UK, a remote user in the UK and 2 federated users in India).

Everything works OK but the video/audio conferencing can be jittery and sluggish. What can I do to diagnose the issue?

Would it be worthwhile implementing the monitoring server. We are actually upgrading to Lync 2013 but thats going to take time to migrate everyone over.

Thanks in advance

It is always worth installing the monitoring server when you intend to use voice and video. It allows you to review the performance and see where the problems are.

Generally you might want to consider

  • Is call quality affected for everyone or do the local users in the office hear each other fine?
  • Is the Front End server spec high enough, check CPU and memory usage
  • Are people using Lync qualified headsets and headsets? Non-qualified devices can severely impact call quality
  • Are people using WiFi to connect? WiFi especially at home can cause major call quality issues
  • Bandwidth and latency issues in Asia can be a problem

If you install monitoring you will be able to see some of these problem in the reports.

Thanks for the response.

Ive installed the monitoring server with SSRS. Which reports should I be looking at for the call quality metrics?

Thanks

I dont use the SSRS report much myself these days as I work for a company that produces a replacement for these reports. I would suggest you start by looking at the User Activity Report and drill down from there into the Conference Detail Report by clicking on the Conference URI metric.

Ive not had much luck with this. Am I missing something? The SSRS reports give me some information but the call quality reports are empty.

Eg, I perform an internal 2 way VC with my colleague for about 2 minutes but the Media Quality report is empty. Any ideas?
