Computer won't turn off
I can't turn off my computer by going to "Start," then "Turn Off Computer." The "Turn Off" option always and only restarts. The "Stand By" button is faded--I can't click on it. As the computer is "shutting down" to restart, an "End Program--f14" box pops up before the computer actually restarts. I can shut off the computer by pressing in and holding the power button.1 person needs an answerI do too

Sounds like something is out of whack!Usually, when the video (or sometimes other) drivers are out of date, the Hibernate/Stand By buttons on the Turn Off Computer menu do not work or are grayed out/unavailable.Please provide more information, run some scans for obvious malicious software and we will look at your video driver situation once we get the information.Do you recall making any video hardware or video driver updates since the system last worked properly?Have you installed any new video oriented software packages lately?Try to refrain from using the power button or you may be back soon with a new thread titled:My System No Longer BootsProvide all the information and we can help you figure out what you need to do to fix it.Maybe someday the XP forums "Ask a question" dialog will ask these questions automatically when a new thread is started so I do not have to ask them every single time. It might even be possible to resolve an issue in a single reply when enough information is provided. Please provide additional information about your system:What is your system make and model? What is your XP Version and Service Pack?Describe your current antivirus and anti malware situation: McAfee, Symantec, Norton, Spybot, AVG, Avira!, MSE, Panda, Trend Micro, CA, Defender, ZoneAlarm, PC Tools, Comodo, etc.Does the afflicted system have a working CD/DVD drive?Do you have a genuine bootable XP installation CD (this is not the same as any Recovery CDs that came with your system)?Fill in the blank: My system was working fine until this happened: ____________________________________________.If the system used to work properly, what do you think might have changed since the last time it did work properly? Now provide the information about your system and your video drivers:Click Start, Run and in the box enter:msinfo32Click OK, and when the System Summary info appears, click Edit, Select All, Copy and then paste the information back here. For video driver information, expand the Components, click Display, click Edit, Select All, Copy and then paste the information back here. There will be some personal information (like System Name and User Name), and whatever appears to be private information to you, just delete it from the pasted information. This will minimize back and forth Q&A and eliminate guesswork. No matter what else you are using for malware protection, perform the following scans for malicious software, then fix any remaining issues:Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware detection programs:Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/They can be uninstalled later if desired. When the scans run clean, then troubleshoot any remaining issues.Do, or do not. There is no try.I decided to save up points for a new puppy instead of a pony!
