Computer virus VZ.EXE on my computer yesterday but appears to be gone today. Is that possible?
Yesterday my computer became infected with a virus I was able to identify as VZ.EXE. I was able to get online for a few minutes and found a description on a website that matched what was happening exactly: when started it imitates a system scan and once finished it will say that your computer is infected with trojans, malware and/or adware and that you need to purchase the full version of their program to remove the infections. It also made it very difficult to get or stay online. The virus scan I did didn't picked up any problems. This morning when I turned on my computer none of the problems I encountered yesterday were there. I was just about to call McAfee and ask about virus removal but held off. I did a search on my computer and the only thing I found wasVZ.EXE-2AD5E561.pf found in folder c:\windows\prefetch size 27kb Date modified 11/22/10 9:35pm Date created 11/22/10 12:46pm Status-online Attributes A What does this mean? Is the virus gone or still there? Should I delete this file in the Prefetch folder? Thanks for any help or advice you can provide. 1 person needs an answerI do too

Hi ktjane,1. Are you running trial version of McAfee program? This virus should have been removed by the antivirus program running on the computer. If it's not removed, then it's still present on the computer.Yes, you can remove the prefetch folder contents.Program which is trial version will not have full functionality, unless we upgrade it to full version. In order to upgrade to full version, we have to purchase the product by paying some amount.Did you know that Microsoft has released enhanced version of security software called Microsoft Security Essentials?Microsoft Security Essentials is available for free for all Windows users and it will automatically update to keep your computer secure. For more information, see Microsoft Security EssentialsVisit our Microsoft Answers Feedback Forum and let us know what you think.

Hi Syed V,No my McAfee is not a trial version. It is a full version of McAfee total protection. I did a full scan and no problems were found. I also did a full system scan with Windows Defender and "no unwanted or harmful software was detected", yet it (vz.exe) was listed as a running program under software explorer.I will go ahead and remove the prefetch folder contents and then check out Microsoft Security Essentials. Thanks!

If you are using McAfee, then update it and run full scan in safemode(restart your PC and press F8 key repeatedly and chose safemode) and run scan.If it didn't detect you could contact McAfee support:http://service.mcafee.com/Default.aspx
