Computer randomly hangs

Hello,

I'm experiencing random freezes in Windows 8.1.
This is the last even recorded by my system,

DistributedCOM ID 10010
The server (BF6C1E47-86EC-4194-9CE5-13C15DCB2001) did not register within required timeout

It's a fairly new computer and it has a clean install of Windows 8.1 on it.
I've installed the latest Windows and driver software for my hardware.

These are my specs

M/B  :Gigabyte P67A-UD7-B3 (BIOS versie F7)
CPU  :Intel i7 2600k
GPU  :HD Radeon 6970 GDDR5 (2x 2 GB)
PSU  :Corsair HX850
RAM  :Corsair Vengeance 16 GB DDR3 (4 x 4 GB)
SPU  :E-MU 1010 PCI (1616m) soundcard
OS    :Windows 8.1 PRO_NL

I have some information that could be valuable in solving this problem.

I had two of the same video cards in my computer before, but after installing an extra PCI soundcard it, sometimes one of them didn't work.
It would either not show up in the device manager, or the device manager exclamation mark saying that there are no resources left for the IRQ (or something simmilar like that)

I've tried to update the BIOS and reset it to its default values and installed a clean copy of Windows 8.1.
Nothing worked.

I later decided to remove the video card, it was an overkill anyway.
Since then it hasn't shown... but I experience hangs ups once in a while.

I have confirmed that the PCI sound card is working perfectly in Windows 8.1 on my old system.
I think it might have something to do with the IRQ, still.

Can someone please help me figure this out.
I need a stable computer for my home studio work.

Thanks in advance!

.

I shall suggest you to look at the Event Viewer.

Press  Winkey +w, to launch the Search box, now type: "event..." you should see 'View event logs'.

Thank you kindly for your reply, S.Sengupta.

Of course, the first thing I did was looking at the Event Viewer before it hanged.

Hi FadingMusic,

"Since then it hasn't shown... but I experience hangs ups once in a while."
Do you mean this issue occur after we remove the video card ? Have you tried to update the video card driver from the device manager ?If it is possible ,it is recommended to download the driver from manufacturer website.

Have you checked task manager whether there is a process occupying much system resources when the system freezes ?
For the logs in the Event Viewer ,please disable the two taks  "IdleSync Maintenance Task " ,"RoutineMaintenance Task "from the taks schedule in this path \Microsoft\Windows\SkyDrive\ and then have a check .

Hello MeipoXu,

I think the system became unstable the moment I installed the E-MU PCI soundcard.
After that, device manager is displaying error code 12 for one of my two video cards.

The PCI soundcard is still working fine on my old system which is using the same operating system.
This led me to believe it is an IRQ related issue.

I've tried installing a clean copy of Windows 8.1 and fully updated both the operating system and all of the device drivers, even after installing the PCI soundcard.

Because I don't need two powerful video cards, I have removed one of them.
After that, error code 12 completely disappeared.

I think error code 12 was probably due to an issue with ATI crossfire.

Regarding even log ID 10010, I do use SkyDrive for work, but I don't see the point of disabling those taks.
I highly doubt this causes my system to completely hang up.

Now the system randomly and completely hangs up, still.
I've checked and took all necessary measures that should've solve this problem.

The problem still persist and I'm afraid this requires more expertise than most obvious answers.

It's most likely caused by my PCI sound card.

Not long after I powered on the E-MU microdock the machine hangs up.
I also noticed that it takes a little longer for the Microdock to be initialized.

The soundcard works fine on my older system.
The microdock is took a little less time to be initialized on my older system.

I'm at a loss.

Hi FadingMusic ,

"Regarding even log ID 10010, I do use SkyDrive for work, but I don't see the point of disabling those taks."
Disabling the two tasks is a troubleshooting method to verify whether it is caused by the two tasks .

"Not long after I powered on the E-MU microdock the machine hangs up"
There is a much possibility that the issue is caused by the this device .
Have you checked whether it is compatible with Windows 8.1 machine ? Considering it worked well in the older system ,there may be a compatibility issue here .It is recommended to download the driver compatible well with Windows 8.1 for this device from the manufacturer website .

Compatibility Center

When the machine hangs, please check the task manager(Ctrl +Shirft+Delete) whether there is a process hanging.

Here is a link for reference of the EMU ,it  may be useful to troubleshoot this issue .

Hi MeipoXu,

Thank you for your response.

I think it has something to do with the soundcard, but not the drivers.
The drivers works fine on my older system which is also running Windows 8.1

I was thinking it could be HPET related, which I put it in 64 bit mode.
My older system did not support the 64 bit mode.

When it hangs up, it completely freezes.

Hi FadingMusic ,

Sorry for the late reply .

Since it worked correctly in the Windows8.1 machine before .The driver can work correctly in the Windows 8.1 machine .We can reinstall the driver to have a check .
When it freezes ,we also can open the task manager(Ctrl +ALT +Delete) to check whether there is a specific process freezing .

There may be some configurations related. It is also recommended to look for help from the device manafacturer .They may have more resources to resolve the  issue .

I'm sorry for my late reply, I've been very busy at work.

Reinstalling the device driver obviously does not work. I also tried to install the device driver through the device manager instead of the setup.

I've monitored the error logs and task manager. Everything seems okay.

I did a little research on HPET 64 bit, it should be compatible with 32 bit as well.
Both my OS and drivers are running in 64 bit.

Since I can't find an obvious reason for the random freezes, I'm starting to think it may be the RAM or CPU...
So far the PC hasn't crashed when my audio interface is turned off.

I will try to run M
emTest86 and CPU test this week.
