Computer only responsive when mouse moves
I recently upgraded one of the computers at work from Windows XP to Windows 7. We are on the 32-bit enterprise edition. The computer is a Dell Core 2 Quad 2.83Ghz processor from 2009. The user asked if I could come down to check out the computer today and noticed something peculiar. I attempted to open chrome and the page was not loading, so I opened task manager and looked at performance page. The entire performance page would stay frozen on 16% (or whatever it was at) until I moved the mouse. While I was moving the mouse around, it was updating every second or so, but the second I stopped, it would freeze again. The user also told me that her clock will gradually get behind a few hours. We image computers fairly frequently and have noticed this on another computer we started to image last week. We are using the same installation disk and installing the same programs from our secure University sources. Could it possibly be a BIOS setting we are not seeing? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

That sounds more like a Graphics driver issue to me? Have you checked the installed drivers? Noel Paton | Nil Carborundum Illegitemi | CrashFixPC | The Three-toed Sloth

1. I would update BIOS and replace battery that BIOS memory is using. 2. How is time set in your netork? Are you in Active Directory environment? (If AD is the case, then the authoritative for time is PDC, unless the time of workstation is out of Kerberos time window.) 3. Use Process Explorer and Process Monitor to find possible bottleneck. 4. In University programs there are several free support cases (something around 4 a year) from local Microsof support (Program administrator should know more information) Regards Milos

Interrestingly you have not mentioned if this phenomenon depends of application(s) opened and if thsi is the case for safe boot. Firefox has similar problem: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=628354 Regards milos

Milos, we updated the BIOS and so far so good. Performance tab is updating as it should be. It all makes sense now as to why even the install of Windows 7 was doing this. Thanks for your help. God bless, Sean

Milo, No matter what programs I had opened, even if there weren't any open, the performance tab on the task manager would still only update when moving the mouse. Sean
