Computer in use and has been locked (error)
I got this error message, saying administrator can only unlock, but it won't let me type name & pw. I tried "Ctrl + Alt + Del" as advised, but no help; no response The laptop is 7 years old, running XP home. Any hope?

Thanks for your reply. Nothing at all happens when I try to type in my user name and PW, because it just doesn't allow me to type in the box at all. I didn't make any changes to the computer, and yes, I am the administrator and only user of the computer in my office.I have a further problem. Now, it only says, "Attempting to hibernate." Nothing will change that screen. All I can do is unplug it and allow the battery to run down; then try to restart. However, the same screen comes up, "attempting to hibernate."

Yes, I did try to do a safe mode boot when restarting (after the battery had worn down, and I had plugged it back in) and while pressing F8 is when the hibernating attempt began. But it doesn't go into hibernation; it just freezes.

Hi Rickjz76,· Do you see the default “Administrator” user account when get to the login screen in safe mode?· Is the computer on a domain environment by any chance?I would suggest you to connect an external keyboard to the laptop and check if you are able to type the login details and let us know the results.Note: Instead of waiting for the battery to run down and get discharged to restart the laptop, you may keep the power button pressed for few seconds until the laptop is shut down.Look forward to hearing back from you. Thanks and Regards,Santosh Y – Microsoft SupportVisit our Microsoft Answers Feedback Forum and let us know what you think.

Hello again Santosh,Sorry it took me so long to reply. I tried last week and thought the message went out, but I don't see it on the thread. Anyway, when powering up again, by hitting F8, I was able to get back to the regular sign in screen, and all is working properly again!Thank you for your help and good suggestions. I backed up my files, also.Hope it keeps working, as it has for the last week.
