Is this a domain member computer? If yes, then see your IT Dept. If no, what is the recent history of this machine and how are you attempting to change the computer name?MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

This is not a member of a domain. This machine is a new installation of XP with upgrades and updates to sp3.I am attempting to change name by going into System Properties, clicking on Computer Name tab, change button and editing Computer Name: line. after clicking OK to the change a box pops up with message:"Computer Name Changes: The following error occurred attempting to change the computer name to xxxxxxxx;Access is denied"

Depending on what you are attempting to change the name of your computer too, you cannot change your computers name to "Administrator", "Guest", or any OTHER user account name. No, I've never had a problem changing computer names after a clean install. Try without any hyphens. I don't see anything wrong with that name as long as you don't have a user account called the same thing. You didn't mistakenly join the computer to a domain, did you?MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!
