Computer Crashed when Unistalled a Program
I tried uninstalling BitDefender and when the computer shut down to re-start, got an error screen saying windows has shut down to protect the system with an error about a driver and something at the bottom about collecting data for a crash dump, then the screen disappears and i get the screen giving me option to start normally or in 3 diff safe modes. I can only start in Safe Mode with no networking or command prompt. Can anyone help me out? Thanks!

Start in Safe Mode with Command Prompt, and when the window has finished loading type in %systemroot%\system32\rstrui.exe and press Enter. This will start the System Restore GUI. Pick a day/time from before you tried to uninstall BitDefender and follow the prompts to let it run. SC Tom

Hey SC Tom, Thank you for your reply. I tried your suggestion above but there does not appear to be a recovery time on the computer to select. Any ideas on what to do next? I'm not getting any available options to create or specify a date/time I want to go back to.

Instead of the "Recommended Restore" there should be a "Choose a different restore point" option towards the bottom of the window. If you choose that and click Next, does it not show you more choices? If not, maybe the crash wiped them out, although I wouldn't think that it should. SC Tom

I get to a screen called Re-Image your computer. A seperate pop-up screen says Windows cannot find a system image on this computer. I close that box and have a Select s system image backup screen. Select a system image is selected but when I hit Next and get the Select the location of the backup for the computer you want to restore screen, nothing is listed. I tried going back to the select system image backup screen to select the Use the latest available system image (recommended) option but it does not allow me to select that one. Not sure i'm even in the right spot but nothing I go into or try is giving me any options to select a date/time to go back to.

You're not getting where you are supposed to be. Are you pressing F8 for your OS selections when booting? F8 isn't also for your particular PC's Restore to Factory Default, is it? If it is, you're pressing it too soon after reboot; you have to wait until the POST screen is gone. The rstrui.exe file will open System Restore, and give you the option of restoring to the Recommended restore: "Select this option to undo the most recent update, driver, or software installation if you think it is causing you problems." It then shows Time: m/dd/yyyy h:mm:ss am/pm (fill in with your last created point), and below that is the selection for "Choose a different restore point." The screen your describing is similar to what I just did to my old HP laptop, restore it to day one. SC Tom

K, I tried it again and I get the System Restore screen. It has a big red circle with an X in it saying No restore points have been created on your computer's system drive. To create a restore point open System Protection. There are no other options and both the Back and Next buttons are faded out. I clicked on System Protection but can't find where I can create a restore point. I get the System Properties tab with Computer Name/Hardware/Advanced/Remote as page options.

If there are no points, then there's nothing you can restore to. And it doesn't make much sense creating a point now since it won't boot normally. You can't create a point in Safe Mode any how (or at least I can't on mine). Well, bummer, I was hoping that would work, since it would be the fastest and easiest method to use. From a Command Prompt in Safe Mode, you can run SFC /SCANNOW if you have a Win7 DVD that's at the same service pack level as your PC. Maybe that will find and missing/corrupt files and replace them with good ones. SC Tom

Hey Tom, I ran the SFC/SNANNOW and when the Verification scan was done I got the message "Windows Resourse Protection did not find any integrity violations.

Have you booted from your install DVD and ran Windows Startup Repair? http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Startup-Repair-frequently-asked-questions That's about all I have left to suggest. -- SC Tom
