Component Services Locked in Starting State (XP SP3)
One particularly mission-critical system in our company's network is having serious issues since SP3 installation. Component Services is locked in the Starting state, as well as Shell Hardware Detection, and Network Connections Service. Volume Shadow Copy service also shows an error in Event viewer each startup. These are all related to Component Services not starting. This is particularly daunting because I am unable to update Microsoft Security Essentials, Apply Updates, get Event Logs Remotely, or issue commands with WMI from a remote machine. Below is the steps taken to resolve the issue thus far. (System tests clean of viruses and malware on multiple different scans) 1. KB313222 - reset all security settings to default 2. Removed and restored the %windir%\Registration folder 3. Explicitly set full access permissions to the entire drive for System and Administrative Users 4. Used Add/Remove windows components with no selections to 'Re-install' component services 5. Checked Service loading status using services.msc through task manager while system is booting in both Safe Mode and Normal mode, using both in Local and Domain login (system takes 5 minutes to boot while it waits for services to start) 6. Removed all externally connected hardware, re-installed USB root hub drivers 7. Stopped the Shell Hardware Detection service, no change to behaviour 8. Disconnected and Reconnected to the domain 9. Memory and Hard-Disk error scans As stated, this computer is easily the most important system in our network. It is a manifest system for a multi-million dollar shipping operation, and cannot easily be re-installed without considerable downtime and financial loss to our company. On a side note, I found it strange that when typing a '\' backslash in the run window, it always opens a mapped network drives folder instead of (C:). This may be trivial, but I felt it may be worth noting.2 people need an answerI do too
