Complete list of things I'd like improved in Windows 7 after a few days of testing - some will help with remote support calls
I've got a list of issues with Windows 7 after serious testing although I think it is a clear step above Vista. I like Windows 7 but I have some concerns that I'd like addressed before final release First thing - EVERYONE I spoke to even at the MS booth at CES said they want the UP FOLDER back in explorer - yes there are other ways to go back one folder but the up folder was convenient.Classic start menu - not an option - classic start menu makes it easier to support clients if they have key components such as network properties and my computer on the desktop. I'm not saying it should be the default but why not make it an option as it was in Windows XP and Vista? [edit] Landgrader gave a good tip below for putting icons on the desktop using personalize.Media Center won't let you click on album art cover once a song is already playing to play the new song from the album art cover. Seems only logical.Media Center - often has static in playback - using Audigy 2z sound card.Search works well but it would be great if the search in the start menu had a drop down just like run has in the start menu so you can repeat a search from your search history.Aero interface stops working without message so flip 3d stops with alt-tab - using the troubleshooting fix sometimes solves it by enabling desktop manager - sometimes it can't - how do you manually enable Windows desktop manager - personalize desktop works but nothing to control the aero interface Since most current receivers and other media streaming capable devices will support .flac file playback, it seems a shame not to use the native media player in windows as a media streaming server - instead because windows does not natively support flac playback, we have to look at alternative hardware streaming solutions or mediaplayers similar to windows media player but with flac support such as tversity or Twonky or NeroWinver does not tell you if you are running 64 or 32 bit - computer properties would be improved if 64 or 32 bit was listed in the top section. It never states if you are installing the 32 or 64 bit version during installation. It would be nice if it was easy to see what version and build of windows you were running by going to computer properties or by running winver - currently it tells you Windows Version 6.1 - Build 70000 - it doesn't say 7000 x64 081212-1400During Install if you attempt to install with a brand new drive it won't install until you format the drive and reboot.[edit] osu9400 mentioned that there is no desktop icon for IE - this was very handy for clear items and change settings etc before going into IE.[edit] do something with the 200 MB partion in disk manager so it is clear that it is a restore point or whatever - change the color of it, just make it more clearly defined.

"How do you put my network places on the desktop - not a shortcut but a fully functioning icon like you could have with Vista and XP and 2003 and 2008 so you can right click and go to properties"?Here is a solution for network places icon on the desktop. 1. Open Control Panel 2. Open Appearance & Personalization 3. Open Personalization 4. In the upper left corner open Change desktop icons.

I could not agree more with your first two issues.

1. Yes, please give us an UP folder icon.2. I have made many complaints about the new task bar super bar apple dock thing. I would be happy if they could integrate some simple suggestion into it. for example, turn quick launch back on and don't integrate running vs launch icons. The new bar shows promise with all the live previews, but they should not take away very useful funcationality. The new bar is very UGLY in this beta. 3. Speaking of desktop icons, why is there no option for IE icon?!?!?!?
January 13th, 2009 9:45pm

why take out classic view anyway? if you want people to migrate from xp which they have been using for a very long time (and older Os's that have this) it is going to be very hard to convert with no classic view.btw- if you dig a bit in Tools/Folder Options/View- if you put a check on "always show menu's" it will put in windows explorer- file/editi/view (and the rest) permanentlyAlso in Control Panel on the right side bottom you will see "all Control Items" if you click that it will show you all the icons in control panel but you have to do it this way each time you go into control panel.I still like to have the option to put it in Classic Viewrobin

The newtask-baris far more superior to the frankly useless one in XP / Vista. Quick launch is already turned on, it's the whole start bar.. If you can't tell the difference between an icon, and an icon with a square around it, then use the basic theme.. The new bar looks much better than the previously cramped and crowded bars in XP / Vista.3) With regards to the IE Icon, there has never been one.. you have to use a shortcut ;)As for taking the classic theme out.. people are going to have to get used to the new theme, they can't keep living in the 90's. Why should MS code a whole new theme, just for a few people who can't get used to a new superior theme. I'm sure that somewhere there will be a copy of the old theme to download anyway, so it's not as if it's impossible to get..

In fact, you can add it in Vista via a registry entry but not the desktop icons options.

I don't understand the need of a up folder button : the address bar (like Vista) allows you to go up in the tree with a click, like a "super" up folder button. why do you prefer a dedicated button ?
January 14th, 2009 10:41pm

pelletan - while it may be easy for you - try to consider an end user. They are the reason MS has dumbed down widows so much since XP in the first place. The up arrow guarantees you go to the next level up - you could miss click and get the address when clicking on the folder location.

It's a shame they've taken out some of the best bits in Win7. Whilst most of the features I and others seem to like is personal preferance, it shows that some of the old features aren't any worse than the new ones. I can navigate through folders as fast with theUp button and address barVs. the vista style "folder" seperation address bar.WhilstI prefer the Classic start menu butI could get use to the "newer" style too. It doesn't matter too much asI use a Quickbar to launchmy day to day programs. Was also wondering where the IE icon went from the desktop. Bring that back for sure :)Things i'd like to see back as default: Quickbar, Menu Bar and Status bar. Can't believe Ihave to goto: Layout > Menu Bar (tick)Every program uses the menu bar as a navigation for commands\functions.

Too bad MS doesn't take polls before they take out features in their OS and applications. Lord knows I wouldn't have said - yes please by all means take away a gui interface that lets me show mailboxes sizes in exchange 2007 - I'd much rather write twenty of lines of code using the "powershell feature".

I completely agree with the up folder button. I used it until I upgraded to vista, and it wasn't there.

Piscoe - I have actually taken a couple of MS polls - but they were completely useless - they would ask questions with no options to give you own ideas and were very limited. They were designed so all feedback was positive and only gave good reviews of a feature. This is an example of what I'd expect in an Exchange Beta pollDid you think Powershell improvedExchange 2007- 1 being a little - 5 being a lot - no place to say I would never use powershell if I could use a guiDid you think Exchange 2007 took more or less time to set up than Exchange 2003 -more, less no place to say it took me a long time because I had to learn powershell just to install a certificateAre you likely to roll out Exchange 7 in the future - yes, no - no place to say yes, but I'd really prefer it had all the same functionality in the management console that it used to have.No place at all for you to let them know what needed improving - just yes no, 1 -5 questions - but no reasonWHY you gave them a low score or what needed improving.

I think all this talk of 'give me back the up icon' is a prime example of people refusing to take a look at the functionality of a change. I'm a big nester and creator of my own folders. And yes I had come to use the little yellow folder icon with the up arrow on it. Now instead of this yellow folder there is a refresh icon/button. Very handy place for it actually and yes at first instead of noticing how nice it was to have the refresh option there instead of buried in a drop down menu I was frustrated because I was reaching for the up menu icon. But guess what I noticed as I traveled across the address bar towards the back arrow key, The address bar is now 'active' with a black triangle delineating each folder level. Not only could I simply click on the folder above the one I was in on the address bar to go back one folder. But I could click on any of the higher folders to instantly travel to it. Jumping up 2, 3, 4 nested folder levels instantly. This to me is far superior to the little up icon that I was missing so much. So yes my preciousIconthelittle yellow folder with the up arrow was missing but as soon as I used this new feature twice I stopped looking for it.Computer User

I would like to see more biometrics options. i like how Windows 7 supports fingerprint readers in all, but i would like for it to be able to supportretina readers as well. now that would be cool. i made one for one of my notebooks once and it would be cool if Windows 7 would just recognize it right after the installation.

Maybe before they add more they should fix/improve what they have. It took me 3 weeks to get my scanner to work, and it still has bugs. I have been having issues when I resume from sleep with it not responding to my fingerprint reader. It shows the icon and all but when I scan my finger nothing happens. It would also be nice if they added the ability to use the biometrics to log in to websites or other boxes, like passwords for secure jump drives.PS> Anyone else having issues with freezes on this website using Firefox
