Compact message dialogue box in Outlook Express pops up repeatedly
A few days ago, my av program (AVG) found 2 Trojan programs and deleted them. Since then, the "To free up disk space, Outlook Express can compact messages" dialogue box pops up randomly, about every 20-30 seconds, whether OE is open or not, and whether IE is open or not. It doesn't matter if I cancel or okay the process.I've tried the steps outlined in the self-support manual online, but when I tried to reload the .dll files (by hitting save>run), two of the files give me error messages-regsvr32msjava.dll says "specified module could not be found"regsvr32mshtml.dll says the file "was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found" Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks.1 person needs an answerI do too

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2398839 Sorry, it took me a while to find it again. I did not try recreating a new identity, as we have two linked to this account already. I don't have Windows Search. Thanks, Shari

That is a very good article, but it does not address your issue. It's usually Windows Search, but it could be something else. The problem is with the registry counter that gives you the prompt after 100 closings of OE. It is being increased quicker than it should be after installing SP3, even if you are not using OE. These are some of the possible causes.IBM Rapid Access keyboard (driver) RAKDLL.DLLWindows {Desktop} SearchMailwasherNero plug-in(s)Opening EML files while OE is closed will also contribute to the registry count.Various anti-virus, anti-spyware and third party firewalls, especially if they were running when you installed SP3.Archived thread discussing this issue in June 2008:http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.outlookexpress.general/browse_frm/thread/fcd35fbfa457fd6fIn the case of Windows Search, (the #1 offender), you have to tell it to stop indexing OE.Windows Search. Set Desktop Search Options: http://www.microsoft.com/australia/windows/desktopsearch/search/options.mspxIn the Windows Control Panel | Indexing Options | Modify. Clear the check box for Outlook Express. In the case of Nero Scout, see Item 2.3 on page 8 here.ftp://ftp6.nero.com/user_guides/nero8/scout/NeroScout_Enu.pdfIn the option to exclude selected file types from indexing, be sure to add these file types:.eml, .dbx & .nwsBruce HagenMS-MVP Oct. 1, 2004 ~ Sept. 30, 2010Imperial Beach, CA

Bruce,I updated Nero, and it seems (at least for the time being) to have fixed the problem. Thank you! (I disabled the Nero Scout feature.)Shari

Good to hear. Nero is #2 on the list, so it should be good now.Bruce HagenMS-MVP Oct. 1, 2004 ~ Sept. 30, 2010Imperial Beach, CA
