Communications issues in Windows 7
I just did a fresh install ofWindows 7 beta x64 on a computer that used to run Vista Ultimate x64 without encountering problems with communication. I'm having several issues communicating with Microsoft services - Windows Update times out, activation times out, and downloading TV setup data in Media Center times out. I can browse to Microsoft websites and download filesin IE just fine though.I understand that some Microsoft services may be overburdened right now, but these functions work fine on other computers on my home network. I hope someone here has some useful suggestions that I hadn't tried yet.

The only information i have seen was people should activate first. Then try Windows update. But since your activation times out i would wait a day to give the servers a chance to recover. Then activate. I would also look for KB961367 for the update to Media Center. That may help resolve that issue.~Alex T.~Windows Desktop Experience MVP~

I really encourage to wait a few days in testing this. Eventually Windows 7 Beta connects to other servers and they are really busy at the moment.Peter Forster, MVP Virtual Machine, Austria

I installed KB961367, but I'm still having the same issue. I tried doing a fresh install on a different computer on my home network, but it's also exhibiting the same symptoms - totally different hardware in that one.Hopefully it's just busy MS servers, but I'm also wondering if there's something in my home network or Internet provider that Windows 7 just doesn't like. I'm surprised I haven't seen anybody else post that they can't activate.

I will wager money on it just being the busy servers. With all the activity and requests for downloads of this Beta they have had to adjust the loads and put some other servers on the download to comply with the demand. As such other areas are affected. It will activate once the servers have a chance to recover. I have used the online activation a couple of times already and it has worked for me. I dont see why your ISP would even care what OS you are using. You are paying for their service. Not for them to filter you cause of what OS you are using. ;-)~Alex T.~Windows Desktop Experience MVP~

What network connection are you using? Wireless? WPA2? 802.11n? I'm too having problems when using a WiFi network that is protected by WPA2 Personal and uses 802.11n (Apple TimeCapsule).IfI useanother access point (WPA and 802.11g) it works fine.

I'm using a wired connection. Linksys gigabitswitch ->Linksys RV-042 router -> Linksys cable modem. I've discovered I also can't install the Netflix extension for Media Player, which also comes from a Microsoft site.

I just solved the issue. I updated my Linksys RV042 router's firmware from 1.3.7.10 to 1.3.12.6-tm and all my communications issues went away.I'm not sure what haschanged between Windows Vista and Windows 7 - Inever experiencedany of those issues under Vistausing the old firmware, but I'm posting the results here for the smarter people to figure out.
